Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have been sniffing around the great wealth of information here. Very impressed.

I have just recently purchased my first Patrol, a 1999 GU 4.5l petrol Ti. I purchased the car to tow my R35 track car in my sig to and from the tracks around SEQ 15 times a year from my home in Brisbane and the odd interstate trip to Bathurst/Eastern Creek etc once a year.

I like power and torque and plenty of it! I certainly do not want to be left twiddling my thumbs whilst lugging the gib lump around. Consequently I am considering a custom inter-cooled turbo upgrade and dual fuel lpg conversion starting next week. The guys from Mercury Motorsport who look after my R35 are awesome. they just happen to have a great in house fabricator who is a patrol nut, and mechanics with loads of custom turbo install experience.

If you're interested, check out my r35 build thread in the link below: (btw, hi to any SAU forum members lurking here)

R35 Build - Skylines Australia

Anyway, I would appreciate everyones thoughts on the following:

  1. Turbo choice
  2. ECU choice, tuning ability for petrol & lpg and cost
  3. Need for upgrading the engine internals or not (when the job is done right, car is well maintained and sensible boost applied)
  4. Costs of the inter-cooled turbo upgrade by those who have been there before and whether they were happy or not with the outcome
  5. lpg conversion considerations, especially regarding turbo mod, and who to see in Brisbane.

Thanks for reading,

Mark

Hi mate,

sounds like a good plan. as for the ecu, have a look at ProFIRE Engine Management you may need to contact them to see who can help you out in brisbane, but I used to know a guy here in perth who had a twin turbo vy gen3 running straight lpg and 16 injectors (dual staged) with one of those ecu's.

good luck and make sure you throw up some pics.

oh and welcome to the forum

Most 4.5 turbo conversions seem to use the GT35, fron an XR6 Turbo.

Conrods are the main drama, probably good to about 8psi.

PM Raptorthumper on this site, he has all the info for this conversion.

what sort of power are you chasing from this? I am currently getting 473rwhp out of my turbo charged tb45 all custom internals, this is with lower boost and less a couple of other goodies for running in. Now time for more boost and some extras hoping for between 550-600rwhp. before building this i also built my own custom turbo intercooled setup and was getting 200rwkw. it had all standard internals and intake manifold. Custom fuel rail with 550cc injectors, td42 high mount exhaust manifold, GT35R turbo, 3" exhaust, microtech ecu fitted by MAZFIX, and a top mounted water to air intercooler. running 12psi boost. Done approx 60,000km like this until i wanted more power and build the new one.
hope this helps

Thanks turbotb45. 600 rwhp, Fantastic!
I am really just after a great responsive torquey engine for towing, I don't have a number in mind.
would like to run a setup without an engine build which it seems like you were able to achieve there with your setup. If I get the itch for more power, I don't mind looking at an engine rebuild with strengthened internals down the track. Thanks for the info. I might have some more questions this week as decisions on parts is being made.

Hey mate, think I've seen yours on the Mackay 4x4 forum, very impressive setup. :bigthumb:

I'm hoping to make it to the febuary 11 meet at Palmyra dragway and would love to see yours run, you should come along and kick some commodores and falcons with me.

hey mate, yep that is my car you seen on the mackay4x4 forum. bit different setup now, different custom manifolds, different turbo, methanol injection, triple plate carbon button clutch etc, etc. hoping to run finke, dirtsprintz, outback challenge events. Are you racing at palmyra?

hmm, thats a long thread. did see that one before, didnt make the connection to the same guy posting here. was going off what was written in the post about stock internals for the first part of his build before he went for more power.
