4.5L petrol GU intercooled turbo upgrade

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have been sniffing around the great wealth of information here. Very impressed.

I have just recently purchased my first Patrol, a 1999 GU 4.5l petrol Ti. I purchased the car to tow my R35 track car in my sig to and from the tracks around SEQ 15 times a year from my home in Brisbane and the odd interstate trip to Bathurst/Eastern Creek etc once a year.

I like power and torque and plenty of it! I certainly do not want to be left twiddling my thumbs whilst lugging the gib lump around. Consequently I am considering a custom inter-cooled turbo upgrade and dual fuel lpg conversion starting next week. The guys from Mercury Motorsport who look after my R35 are awesome. they just happen to have a great in house fabricator who is a patrol nut, and mechanics with loads of custom turbo install experience.

If you're interested, check out my r35 build thread in the link below: (btw, hi to any SAU forum members lurking here)

R35 Build - Skylines Australia

Anyway, I would appreciate everyones thoughts on the following:

  1. Turbo choice
  2. ECU choice, tuning ability for petrol & lpg and cost
  3. Need for upgrading the engine internals or not (when the job is done right, car is well maintained and sensible boost applied)
  4. Costs of the inter-cooled turbo upgrade by those who have been there before and whether they were happy or not with the outcome
  5. lpg conversion considerations, especially regarding turbo mod, and who to see in Brisbane.

Thanks for reading,

Mark

Looks close to finished , how long do you think before its on the rollers for a tune ?
tuning today and tomorrow morning. hope to get it back for this weekend.
dyno graphs and video to come then hopefully
175 rwkw at 8 psi
previous peak power of 99rwkw came on over 4000rpm now comes on at 2000rpm lol. dont have a graph with torque curve etc yet.
You have got to be happy with that!!
got the car back tonight.all I can say is... wow.
superclean. the Mercury guys have really done a good job.
took some better pics (all other stuff was off my phone's camera).
also have a video which I will post soon.

Wow man top job, reminds me of a turbo 80 series sleeper i saw at Superlap 2008. The owner claimed it was making over 400kw atw and it certainly looked it! In the corners it was all over the place but on a straight it ate all the evos and gtrs for breakfast.
sound doesn't quite do it justice but here it is anyway

Sounds great but more importantly, Its good to see a top notch turbo conversion.

Now for the burnout video.............:)
Good job man, sorry if you have answered this question already, but did you have to change any of the internals?

Have you seen this youtube clip of 2 turbo patrols in the mud?

Mate,

Just read your skyline thread from start to finish, amazing bit of gear. Loving the cf panels! Did you end up running quicker than you 55.5 at QR? Awesome job, keep up the good work.
yeah, on 15 Feb I did a 53.27 on the sprint but still have about another second to slash from that this year I reckon.
we have carbon doors, lexan windows to fit and a whole bunch of stuff to cut out of the car and strip from the engine bay/elsewhere to get the weight down another 100kg (currently 1600kg dry no driver) before we add in about 40-50 kg of roll cage. pretty impressive car considering it just has bolt on performance parts and weight reduction. especially considering the driver is a novice hack also!

will be interesting to see how it goes on semislicks - have been running michelin full slick tyres to date.
Looks very neat and sounds great, what fuel are you running on (inc addatives if any) ?

yeah stock internals. so only running relatively low boost.

though I think we might be able to push the boost up form 8 psi to maybe 10-12? what do people think? I recall turbotb45 running 12psi using a 35R turbo and geting around 200rwkw without any real dramas.
Hey handbrake - are you using standard injectors?
Standard injectors but only running 8 psi currently. We did install a bigger in tank fuel pump though. Thing is running like a dream. Only problem is it has ferocious pace combined with 3 tonne truck handling!

already chasing bigger numbers? didnt you say somewhere earlier in the thread that you want someone to stop you if this happens?
