Haven't read the whole topic (yet - trying) but in case it hasn't been mentioned - PJ Offroad in Toowoomba are now making adapters to bolt up a ZF six-speed auto to a TD42.

yeah they seem to be the one to watch. They have also just released a zf6 to nissan transfer bolt in adapter so nothing needs modifying when doing a barra swap.

People have been using the zf6 for a while but have had to custom tail/front drive shafts, like most things though I’m not entirely sure the zf6 has proved it’s self long term in a patrol and where never the most reliable box to start with.

Jim

i think the problem with the 6 speeds and i could be wrong but they are usually a double overdrive box. so 6th gear is a stupid low like .63 drive ratio or something crazy and unless you had oldmavs ute which is stupid light weight. the torque curve just wouldnt be there to use 6th gear to much. unless you run like 4.3 or 4.6 diff gears to offset it a bit.
where as i know the 5 speed overdrive is very similar to the manual so it will still drive great on the highway. thats my assessment anyway.

Now that's interesting, I think from memory the RE5 still had a better ratio spread but would be a good option plenty of em around.

Yeah most of the Barra/ls guys run 4.3 at minimum when using the re4/6l80/zf6 boxes and 33’s/35’s

well i may have sourced a tiptronic shifter from a bloke in perth. just waiting to see how much he wants but sounds like a goer.
ive spoken to wholesales. with me doing the starter motor mods to the bell housing. kit is about 5. that includes flex plate, torque converter, new sandwich plate with i assume correctly spaces box/tc.
all the flex plate bolts and so forth and obviously the compushift tcu and display screen. 5k doesnt sound to bad to me.
but the tcu is months away. which is good as im in no hurry anyway thankfully.

Yes I found one too. Handy if you are doing it yourself.

My parts list from Wholesale amounted to $6k, but I have a high volume finned alloy oil pan and a throttle position sensor as well on my list. My Compushift was expected early this year, so hopefully that has not changed.

@GQshayne who did you speak to at wholesales which told you about the 800nm mods? the bloke ive been talking to has no clue haha. just keeps saying oem spec rebuild is good for 600nm. im like goddammit i will have more than that haha.
otherwise shifter and centre console showed up. even is the right trim colour to suit my vehicle. big win. just need a floor plate now and then sell some chit to get the wa gear and make it happen.

Stuart Kittle at Wholesale Automatics had a discussion on the torque handling with the place doing my gearbox - Griffiths Automatics at Caloundra. Between them they worked out what they thought was needed. This amounted to the aftermarket TCU, better clutch packs, and heat treating some internals. I think that if you are looking for some parts to do the job yourself, then Chris at Griffiths Automatics might be able to help you as well. I don't think retail is their business, but you could ask them. Very helpful guys.

I will have the parts in a pile ready to go in about a fortnight, or so I am told. I have a GU transfer now, with new seals in it, and have the tacho now working. I have a few wires in place, and have an auto cooler to be fitted soon. So getting close to the serious stuff. When I start doing the job I will start a build thread.

I was offered a RE4 auto, (and I mean still auto) with compushift, converter etc etc built by KEAS the other day for $6900 or so, pretty good deal really.
However, it was aid to be built to handle 1200-1300nm, hmmm, kinda on the limit for me.
So if anyone wants it, send me a PM and I will get you the guys phone number.

I was thinking about that built re4, but it was hard to find a low stall TC which can lockup and stand high torque load when being locked. Any suggestions? So far my modified re4 handle the Cummins engine well after about 12,500kms

Ive got the shifter and surround sorted for me. i just need the floor plate but im in no rush. im hoping a 4 speed auto floor plate is the same as they are pretty common.
