This is from the invoice when they (Nissan dealer) did mine 6 years ago....

Part # .................... Desc. ................. List price ...

32113-VB000 ... Seal-Oil, Front Cover .... $5.88 ....

32136-01J00 ... Seal-Oil, Overdrive G .... $12.56 ....

32240-VB125 ... Shaft & Gearset ........ $476.27 ....

(I paid a fair bit less (like about 40% less) than list, but that's another story ;) )

With 290k on it you'd probably want to look at bearings etc on top of the above, while you have it apart....

Also have a look at Marks Adapters for their upgraded 5th gear... bit different ratio too.

This is timely..........

I have a 'Dec '99 Series 1 GU TD42T. It's done 160,000km. Some towing, but nothing too heavy. I bought it new, and it's had a very easy life.

I changed all the driveline oils today. The oil that came out of both diffs and the transfer case was like new. The oil from the gearbox was heavily discoloured, but the magnet on the drain plug was clean and chip-free. Is this discolouration normal? I last changed it at 120,000km, but don't remember it being discoloured like this.

I've lately been getting some driveline vibration at low speed in 5th gear only, otherwise all OK. I suspect it might be time for the 5th gear upgrade that I've read about. Am I on the right tram?

If I am, I may as well add a new clutch and reduction gears while it's being done. I reckon 43% could be the go.........any opinions or experiences with the different reduction ratios?? I don't do any hard core stuff, but sometimes lower would be better with the camper hooked on the back.

Cheers,
Geoff

New oil on the left................same oil, drained at 160,000km (after 40,000km), on the right

whats low speed in 5th? 5th is an overdrive... 90kph+. and never whilst towing.
Nothing wrong with towing in 5th in appropriate conditions in a properly manufactured Patrol Box as 5th is a "full" gear and overdrive is simply an indication that the ratio is lower than 1:1

The hassle these guys have/had is linked to the faulty 5th gear issue in some early GU box's when the 5th gear spline wasn't milled to a sufficient depth and the gears didn't mesh 100%. That is why there was the "5th Gear repair kit" for the box.

Big thread on the subject here about 12 months or so back with some great pics and research of the problem shafts etc... anything not subject to that manuf fault you can tow in 5th to your hearts content using the appropriate change points and techniques of course.

Obviously if one chooses not too and only use the up to 4th then that is a personal choice so no biggee.

I might add I spend as much time in 5th as I can and always amble along the roads in 5th from about 60-65K's upwards.

As I also said in that recent thread glort yours is non turbo, and is strangling itself at higher revs. Turbo engines are obviously different in this regard.

In case you hadn't already thought of it, now would be a good time to do the rear crank seal while it's apart (can prob'ly dig up the part# for this too if ya want).............
