has anyone found a way of removing the fan and aircon box from under the dash on a GQ? was looking into why my airflow is so bad, looking for a filter of some kind. No filter, but what I did find was the aircon core is REALLY BADLY blocked. seems the fresh air just goes straight into it. So now it needs a real good clean. I have tried getting a vaccuum cleaner nozzle in there, no go. Tried a long nozzle on the air compressor, little luck, but can only access about 20% of it, and anyway the dirt then ends up in the heater core. BTW, yes, tried the search function for those who's standard reply is "search"!!

its a pain in the ass to do.. you have to pull the dash out, pull the piping for the vents on the pasenger side out, then there is i think 6 nuts holding it all it. oh and you have to unclip the loom where it runs over top of it.

No, no, no. Don't bother pulling the whole dash out. That's not where the blockage will be. It will be blocked from the vents behind the bonnet to the fan and motor itself.

The fan can be dropped out very easily. In the passenger footwell the fan is the round looking thing. It comes out by just undoing the 4 or 5 phillips head screws. When I dropped mine out it was chocka block full of leaves. While I was there I also did this thread showing how to stop all the air blowing out the crack beween the fan and the evaporator. That's another place I had a blockage.

You can see how full of junk it was in the photos. Now when the A/C is on and on 4 it's unreal.

The whole set up is quite easy to get to in the footwell alone so a whole dash remaoval wont be needed I reckon. So to answer your question I don't have a step by step method for you. I just kept undoing nuts, bolts and screws till it all came out.

Let us know how you go.

thanks Drew, I know where the problem is, I could see it through the hole where a large elec connection/plug is on the plastic of the housing (behind the glove box), that goes into the area where the core is. It was totally blocked, like a radiator that has been through mud.
had another good look at it all, especially in the orginal workshop manual I have, saw the drain hole, in the bottom, so dribbled the hose in there, and out came the water and so figured it was safe to try and blast the dirt through.
Anyway, got the fan housing off, and that gave me enough room to get the thin wand of the gurney in there. Put heaps of old rags all around and above, and tarps on the floor for wayward water.
Sure enough, really dirty water came out the drain hole. LOTS of it, now core is clean, the fan is only on 2 giving same air as when previously on 4. A/c is now freezing!!

Good to hear and no worries at all. Amazing how a couple of hours work can make such a big difference to the comfort of an already basic car. Enjoy the cold A/C this summer now.
