Ive got a slightly bent gu rear diff I am going to try and straighten myself.

Anybody got any ideas on the best way to do it?

And then i guess they just use a straight edge to check it?

You can do it without a press. Alot use a shaft the size of the axles that goes all the way through the housing with colletts that have the same OD as the axle seal. If the housing is straight the colletts will slip into the axle seal housing.

Im not a fan of the idea. Your work hardening the metal and making it less strong and tough, it will tend to crack more easily now and deform like it did, plastically more easy now. Thats ofcourse assuming your able to be accurate enough to get the dimensions and tolerances OK and all the oil seals still hold up etcetc

Id sell the old housing for scrap and goto a wreckers for a second hand housing.
