Motec have a great free webinar on tuning common rails too.
It is specific to their standalone ecu but I imagine the principals are all the same.
I think it was designed for petrol tuners understand what to do with a diesel.
It is very comprehensive.

 

What you need to know about this engine and its injection system:
1. Nozzles are ordinary, not piezo, simple and reliable
2. Injection pump with three plungers, the most important thing is that the fuel supply control is on the low line, i.e. the pump pumps exactly as much fuel as it was supplied by the low line through the fuel valve at the command of the control unit, this is a very good system, and with good fuel cleaning and sufficient lubrication in the fuel, the high-pressure fuel pump can work even a million kilometers.
3. The rail has a pressure sensor and an excess fuel discharge valve, or it is also called an emergency valve, this is probably the weakest point in the system, but it is easy to change and can even be repaired, it is enough to flare and pull out the plate, there is a spring, it can be stretched a little and everything is assembled back, the problems of this valve, also from dirty fuel, basically, I disassembled the valve and there was a lot of dirt.
Conclusion - do not spare money for good filters and the motor will work for a long time and well
