Backing plates

Just a quick question. Do you have to use backing plates on your diffs? I have a GU front and H260 rear if it matters. My diffs are getting built this weekend and i was just wondering if they have to go on to get the tolerances right? Or can i just leave them off? Im not worried about mud and stuff getting in there cause i try and stay out of the mud.

AFAIK they tend to help pads wear more evenly by keeping dirt off the disk and then the pad but it's marginal.

Not sure about clearances and tolerances in the rear but in the front if you leave them out the hub seal will run approx 1.5mm further inboard on the hub, can be an advantage if the old seal has gone hard and worn a groove in the hub.
