Hello Everybody,

I have the 12VDC Baintech volt/amp meter with the hall effect sensor for measuring current. This has come with a length of cable and has been pre wired into the gauge terminal block.

I have not yet chosen where to mount the gauge, but I want to measure the current load coming off the Auxillary battery. Is it possible to add a piece into the hall sensor cables and extend them so I can mount the gauge wherever I want, or will this affect the final result on the meter, as it does on a thermocouple.

Hi Graham,

You have got me stumped with the Hall Effect Sensor. A Hall Effect device is a Pulse Generator or voltage induction device. Are you sure that you’re not referring to the ammeter shunt? Is it like a flat bar? If so, then yes you can extend the cables to it.

Ammeters use a 1 ohm shunt, so that they can read voltage drop across the shunt. In other words, a shunt ammeter is just a voltmeter reading voltage drop. If the shunt is 1 ohm, the current will equal the voltage drop. I=V/R if R=1, then I=V.

I would guess that you would be OK, but you could just check with Baintech.
The 4 wires is just a power supply for the hall effect sensor and its' output.
The answer depends on the input impedence of the input used to sense the voltage produced by the hall effect sensor, compared to the additional cable resistance that you will be adding.

Sounds like I started an interesting debate here. It is definately a Hall Effect sensor, my reason for going with it is that there is no inline load unlike a shunt. It is capable of measuring up to 50A in this application, which I am unlikely to see in my lifetime in the back of the Patrol.

I am going to mount the sensor under the hood and then put the gauge inside somewhere. A passengers A pillar pod would be great but I dont think they exist. I have a 3 gauge pillar pod for the drivers side but it will be full (Boost, EGT, Oil Pressure)

I think everybody should have these gauges, it's a simple install, and then you know what your fridge etc is really pulling rather than guessing it. Mine was $165.00 from Battery World
