In the DVD that came with the 4wd action mag i got yesterday , Allan Gray goes all the way to Adelaide to do a bit of maintenance on a chaps HILUX

He does highly scientific test to determine the volume of Blow by the engine is producing, and I guess extrapolate by highly technical mathematical calculations , hypotesize how shagged the rings /bore might be.

In practice he places a pink ballon on the end of the breather hose and times how long it takes to explode due to the pressure in side being greater the the remaining expansion capabilities, its maximum elasticity being exceeded blah blah blah

Any one ever do one on their engine?
If the two litre engine should do it in three seconds , what time frame would a 4.2 have ?

any thoughts?

Party trick?

Has anyone seen Allan Gray work on a patrol?

I dont think there would be any specific time, just his experience in doing these things tells him that the rate of the balloon inflating roughly in a certain time just says there is lots of blow bye. Having a clock or whateva could be just theatrics so some knob doesnt come along and go what a friggin wifes tale its all guessing, but I think most people get the idea.

don't be silly! Balloons are much betterer are measuring engine compression!
Just make sure ou use a "quality" Balloon, so you know you get a accurate reading !

Also you should confirm the engine is at running temp before the Balloon test , best way is to perform the "ice-cream melt" test on the tappet cover !:D

Hahahah !

The tongue on the muffler test would be a good indication as well I would think.

I tried this last night.
Unfortunately my results don't count for anything as I didn't read the instructions properly and used a yellow balloon instead of a pink one!
