My wheeling plans for the weekend just gone were spoiled when my handbrake locked up as i was humming along at about 80km making an unpleasant shuddering sensation and a terrible smell. After pulling it apart i discovered the friction material on H/brake shoes had become brittle and separated from their metal backing. No prob, easy fix via supersh*t auto.

What does concern me is that the truck mechanic at work tells me it is because of my lift putting tension on the cable so it is pulling on over bumps. I can not understand this as i have not lifted the body yet and the suspension lift i have done should not affect the h/brake drum as it is mounted to the back of the 'box. He wont elaborate just says the same thing over and over again.

Is he full of cr*p?

(IMO i reckon they are just old and thats why they gave it up)

sorry spider you've lost me, my old manual gq had the handbrake on the tail shaft. im guessing thats what you mean by the back of the gearbox.
We are talking about the same thing Neva's.

You'd struggle to get the tailshaft and handbrake assembly off as a unit, so I consider it attached to the gearbox, 'tis all ;)

Hi,
IMO he is full of it, if it was true everyone with a lift would have the same problem.
He probably thinks you have cables to the back wheels type of handbrake.
Nothing re the handbrake changes with a suspension lift.
Cheers

ask the mechanic at work to get under the car and show you which one is the handbrake cable. It should be good for a laugh.

old shoes do fall off. had it happen to a front wheel of an EJ once.

yeah, full of it,he doesnt know what hes talking about thats why he cant elaborate on it. did she lock up when you were driving or just shudder??
a very quick lockup < 1 second then shudders that got progressively more voilent over the 100m or so i took to pull over into the stopping bay. After i let it cool for a bit (didn't know exactly what was going on at the time so i thought i'd let the smoke stop pouring off it) it was not as bad and as i took it home it barely shuddered as i was doing less than 40kph.

Thank you to everyone, once again this site has proven a great source on info....now if you'll excuse me there is a mechanic i have to go and hang sh*t on
