Hey guys, I'm new here! And don't know much about the patrols coming over from Hilux's.
So I was wondering what the price range would be roughly for a pretty basic patrol ,I don't want something that has been fully kitted out that I can't make how I want it set up.
I've been looking for a few weeks now and it seems to be getting harder and harder to find 4.2 wagons with low kms and that have been road cars from the start. Any info where to look other then carsales would be great.

Thanks guys

Bearing in mind the newest 4.2 you will find will be almost 10 years old, finding one with low klms won't be easy. Also, I found when looking for my Patrol, that not many are just used as road cars. They're so big and heavy and have the aerodynamics of a pile of bricks. Off road, they kick ass, and I wouldn't trade mine for anything, but these days people who want the road car for just the occasional trip up a beach buy dual cab utes or Pajeros. So looking for purpose built 4wds over a decade old that haven't been modified at some point is difficult. They are out there, I have mates who've found them, but they looked for ages before finding one. Just keeps your eye out and good luck

Okay, so, I have been researching patrols all day.... The missus has cracked it but it was worth it.
To find a good 4.2 that is in my price bracket could take 6 months... As I don't have a car at the moment I'm struggling.
I have a couple of mates with the crd 09+ models and they haven't had a issue from day one buying the car, ones on 120k,170k and 230k all have the NADS kits from when they brought the car and intercoolers also.
Saying that and if I find a 3L that's in my bracket and leaves me with coin to do mods I'm happy.
I'll be spending 27k-30k on the car that will leave me with 8k-10k to play with.
I can't bring myself to buy a car that's 10-15 years old.

Any info that you would like to add about the 3L will help me out, other then what I have been reading about the beginning of the gu's. Hahaha thanks guys

Having gone through the same process you are going through, I can relate. I can understand people not buying a crd because of lack of power (even though mine does all I need it to do without a worry), but I certainly wouldn't let reliability steer you away from getting one. They are as reliable as any other 3lt crd and I'm always meeting crd owners out camping who have racked up some decent klms on them without a worry. We love ours and I'm glad we got one, but I also (sort of) understand people's obsession with the 4.2. Either way you're in a Patrol :)

I looked at 7 used Patrols and have looked at everything from cheap MKs through to new GUs.

I was holding out for a low K GU 4.2, which appear to be rockinghorse ****. Eventually the local Nissan dealer had a sale, almost throwing out GUs (in comparison with the competition ... they are still a lot of money in isolation) with winches, bars, towbars, spotties etc so I decided screw it I'm getting a CRD.

To be honest, the CRD and auto is so fuss free to drive it isn't funny, and there are mods to get more out of them if you want it.

For real, the only thing that bothers me so far (its early days yet) about the ZD30 is it sounds nowhere near as good as a TD, RD or SD. :)

overpriced conversion junk...... ONLY BUY FACTORY TD's!
Buying a converted td is just as dangerous as buying a 00-02 zd30. DONT DO IT.
plenty of members here have been burnt.

if you want a TD, dont let kays put you off, its like a 1hd-fte, if compression is good its still got half a million kays in it. all the other stuff, suspension, tyres, pump, turbo etc you are gonna change anyway, why put good new low km parts on the rubbish pile instead of actual rubbish?

So much wrong with it being "factory td42t" it isnt funny.

He says its an 01, the doors are, but they are off an ST not a DX, but bonnet isnt if its factory td, neither is grille if its factory td, neither are headlights if factory td, or indicators if factory td, the dash isnt from 01 at all, its from 98-99, they didnt make a dx non-airbag wagon in 01, the steering wheel is from a 98-99 rd28 or td42na DX, that wheel and dash never came on factory turbo td wagon dx or st.

I dunno what part of the car is actually from 01, maybe the shell or the chassis. but every bit of the car i can see(without even seeing the engine bay) says mishmash of this and that conversion.

May as we'll put my 2c in. That thing looks a fn beast, nothing saying it wasn't a factory td42t , if it is built makin 280hp then a scoop for an inter cooler would have been installed , factory inter cooled td42 03 onwards

i buy them with high kms, they are better value imo, because for all the td42's iv had, iv never had a engine problem, just get a compression test and if thats good happy days.

what is a problem is rust. if there isnt any who cares if the panels/chassis have had 100k or 400k of air rushing over them? they are both the same age, same rain etc has been on them.

as for brakes and suspension, diffs etc, youre planning to bin it all anyway, why pay a mountain of cash for something youre changing? get stuff that has done the kays...

What i would look into is getting a factory td42t or td42ti as cheap as possible without rust... the rest is going anyway. lets face it, IF you fix it all up and compression ring lets go.... send the motor to UFI on a pallet and have it built for 5k.

only other thing to look at imo is getting one with heaps of good gear THAT YOU WANT on it already.... again no point in paying for stuff you dont want or arent gonna keep.
