Just changed the LS diff oil in my 91 GQ ST-3, the oil in it was still fairly clean as in dark amber, but it was the oil in it when I bought it back in Feb. It was starting to "grind" a bit going around hard slow corners so started looking in the "cheap" places 1st LOL. Anyway when I drained it I got 1 small piece of metal, 4mm x 3mm x 1mm thick & slightly curved, I think a bit of tooth but that was all & the magnet was clean.
Can putting in new "good" LS oil (Penrite 85/140) make a difference straight away? it sure feels like it when I took it for a drive for a couple of K's, a hell of a LOT smoother. I'm thinking that the car yard I bought it from might have just filled it with ordinary oil, but time will tell I suppose, still a bit worried about that bit of metal though. :D

p.s. The oil in the front diff is bright GREEN WTF!!!!!! same colour as the green dot next to your name when logged in.

You need to learn how to "search".

I'll teach you how, firstly go here;
Google

In the search bar, type in the problem you want to solve. E.g. "Rear diff oil change PATROL GQ"

But anyways, to help you out abit, read these links. Has information like, how much is the oil, which oil grade to use, how much to fill, wtf is metal doing in my diff.

Found steel bits in Rear Diff - OFFROADSUBARUS.com

Overlander 4WD :: View topic - GQ patrol LSD

How do you change diff oil? @ ExplorOz Forum

What oil to use in my Patrol’s LSD?: SA Nissan 4x4 Online Resource Forum

If theres any questions that you can't find on the net, then ask us we'll be happy to find out your issue. I'm not flaming at you, I'm just teaching you something that will save you time and others.

Good luck,

new oil would take a couple of weeks to make a difference as it has to clean all the gunk off the clutch plates in the lsd side of things.
but in all honestly if you found a chunk of metal on the drain plug of your diff. new oil aint going to do fark all. pull her out and have it checked over by a decent diff place or a good 4wd mechenic.
most likely broke a piece of tooth off the crownwheel. but better to have it checked out now and it may be salvagable or leave it and cost a new diff.

Agreed. Anything that size is a cause for concern.

Ask as many questions as you like. I am crap at searching and can rarely find anything for some reason. I am on another forum where my opinion is sought regularly, and a lot of the time I cannot even find my own stuff I have posted up!

I wasn't really asking any questions, just stating what I did & what I found, ok maybe asking if this had happened to anybody & opinions.
But thanks for the links anyway, specially the 1st one.

I'd done the engine flush treatment (200ml's) for the last 1000k's as stated in a forum (magazine forum) to do just that. Others there had done this & it worked well for all of them, apparently it's a well known thing for Patrol LSD's only, as they have metal shims.

I just drained a front diff and found some swarf from manufacture. it was a little domed bit of metal from where they drilled the breather hole. I wouldn't worry about the bit of metal. Maybe leave it a month or 2 and drain the oil again into a clean container and see if there is any new bits on the drain plug. Your motor being a TD42 your diff is probably ok. Now if it was an RD28 then the fully sick awesome power would lead me to suggest you overhaul the diff before it explodes. :)

As for the green stuff: previous owner might have put LSD oil in the front diff. A plausible mistake.

I notice you didnt comment on how ridiculously thick the rear diff oil is.... Are you sure you put the right oil in?

Hahaha my baby rb30 motor is :p at you

The green stuff I just found out is something called "Redline Shockproof oil" & is supposed to be the best you can get - Redline LightWeight Shockproof oil for your gearbox/diffs - Brindabella Motor Sport Club - Australian Rallying Forums -
http://www.redlineoil.com.au/Uploads/Downloads/tech dataweb spgopds 001.pdf

& I didn't mention that it took me nearly an hour to put just under 2.5L of oil in cause I thought it was just me :p   trying to squeeze it in through that bloody skinny pipe/hose that comes in the lid.

Here is a simple, cheap way to add your diff oil..... For next time.

Auto part Vehicle Pipe Car

Vehicle Automotive exterior Car Bumper Auto part

Another successful way is weed spray bottle/spray, cheap from Bunnings, but you should really have one for each type of oil.
