Hey all

Just wondering if anybody knows or can recommend a good civil engineer to design a retaining wall for me. Located mudgeeraba gold coast.
Will be a little difficult as it's about 1.8m high at highest point and will surcharge a lower side retaining wall.

It's doing my head it currently.

I'd enquire at your local Council. If they are prepared to recommend anyone then getting the permits will be easier. I have done this in the past when arranging a subdivision and it worked a treat.

Thanks idiot😉
And thanks esty I'll get in touch with them for a chat.
And not really. It would defeat the purpose anyway as I'm trying to gain back yard space. Terracing it would loose more than I'm gaining. But appreciate the idea. Btw that grey wall looks pretty cool.

They'll just give you a standard drawing, so don't pay much for it. You'll be paying for their signature more than the info. A limestone block wall will be tiered, concrete wall will be 'L' shaped, will depend which side of the wall is on your property as whether or not you will need a large concrete heel at the end of the footing. I could get you a sketch but you will need someone local to sign off on it. Doesn't need to be a civil engineer, a structural engineer can sign off on it.

That's what I thought. There is a little in it due to it surcharging a lower wall but I don't see it being that hard.
I would love to be able to use concrete sleepers as they are easy as to build. And pretty cost efficient. Which are also already basically preengineered. So I'll keep that in mind.
Couple ive spoke to so far want upward of 2k for the drawings.
Hey benos. Fling us a pm. The old man can help you out. He's got a couple of decades under his belt lol.
Pm sent mate.

You don't think 2k is fair for a signature and drawings for something like that??
To be honest i dont what would be considered a good price or not. Never had anything like this done. But really I don't think it's to bad.
More asking to find someone who has been good to deal with and done a reasonable job. It's tough trying to pick a good one from a bad one based off a website.

Skegbudley - most countries don't differentiate between the 2, it's just a field you might specialise in. I've found here in Oz, Perth really, that Structural Engineers can't design a road, drainage or anything like that and Civil Engineers couldn't tell you the size of a bolt let alone design a structure.

Benos - should be more in the region of $800-1000. Drawings will be a couple of hours, layout, notes and a section or 2. The only thing that should take a bit of work will be checking the surcharge on the wall below. Basically your paying for the liability they take on.

Ok ill keep that in mind as far as price. From the few phone calls I've had though this is not even close haha.
Also will make sure they are civil engineers not structural.
What's involved in checking a surcharge for it? just so I know what they are doing haha.

OK a bit off topic here but on topic at the same time. I've just built 30m 600mm high retaining wall from treated pine. The wall part is made from 75x200 sleepers and it has a top cap using 50x200. All put together with 150mm bugle head screws. My problem is the 50x200 top caps are all warping about 7-10cm from one end to the other and my brand new wall is already looking shabby. Is there any fix for this? Or do I need to use a different type of wood for the top cap ie: cypress pine?

Ring council first. Some councils have a preferred list of pre-qualified consultant engineers.

Benos, forgot to tell you but the old man strangly advised that before you do anything, you need to ring council for sorting out approval. Also did you get the email? Might have to do it off the computer if you didnt
