hi guys, wonder if you can help!

ive just notice that my patrol clunks over and over again in reverse gear, its really smooth forward no noises at all, there is no clunk when you shift into reverse, but as soon as you start reversing there is a clunk then a pause then a clunk then a pause, any one have any ideas it only has 3 weeks warranty left so need to get it sorted if its gonna be pricey!

its a gu 2.8 y61!

any help appreciated

1.When you say its clunks, are you saying it clunks every revolution of the tyre in reverse, This could be some form of damage to either the crown wheel or pinion,

or every revolution of the tail shaft? This could be a shagged universal joint sticking or failing.


Or,

2. Just when you go from a stop position to reverse, then it clunks, then brake, then it clunks again?
If its this, to me it sounds like your pinion nut may be loose, thus causing this excessive backlash that you have described.

hi

when reverse is selected in 2wd i start reversing then there is a clunk followed by a delay then another clunk and so on, however when 4wd is selected there is no clunk and its as smooth as in reverse, its also just started juddering in 4th and 5th gear under load at around 50 mph, im thinking its a worn stretched chain in the transfer case? if it was anything to do with the gear box or diff it would be doing it in 2wd and 4wd?
