ok everyone, time to get your thinking caps on.

im making a concrete frame to house some steps at the edge of me deck.
now the bags of concrete i have say, 600mm x 150mm x 50mm or .01 cu meters.

my step mesures 1600mm x 500mm x 150mm.

so if i take the mesurements given on the bag in mm i requrire 26.6666 bags of concrete. if i take the cu meters measurement on the bag i only require 12 bags of concrete.

which one is it that i need, 26 or 12. i cant for the life of me figure this out.

if the bag says it does .01 cu meters and provides measurements that say it does .0045 cu meters.

is there a problem with my maths or am i losing the plot here.

you need 120l of concrete. ie 0.12m3
therefore 12 bags should do it.
I would get a couple extra just incase.
If you have a decent barrow you should be able to do this in 4 batches.

You adding sand to that equation, or are you making a pure concrete slurry? Or are you using that premix stuff?

Chuck an extra 1/3 shovel of ordinary cement in with each bag, put some reinforcing rods inside your formwork as well and don't make the mix too runny.;)

Well it was to be just the bag concrete but these measurements threw me out. I do agree on the 12 + spare and do a couple of batches coz this gives me the chance to sit some mesh in.
But as I said why do their measurements say it makes .0045 cu metered by the measurement they provide, then right next to that is says .01 cu meters.

Buying rapid set (pre mixed concrete in a bag)
Is absolutely dear as poison as apposed to mixing in a mixer
For a non heavy traffic area (cars ,trucks, machinery ect),id say 4 or 5 to 1 mix
Work like this ,
1 bag of cement is 20 KGs
Mix that with about 100Kgs of concrete blend and about 20-25L of water
Bitta reo,thats all
To hot a mix in a hot day itll crack like anything
To hot a mix either ratio to strong (3 to1 ratio)or mix to dry
To sloppy itll take longer to cure
Dont over work the finish
Trell it once, maybe broom finish or not
Then leave it

You could just mix it in the barra, 4 of blue metal, 2 of sand and 1 or 1 and a bit of portland cement, heaps cheaper.;)

first thing to do is get your self a sturdy bucket, measure all materials with this bucket.

Never, never use the shovel to measure. work the water out, and put that in first, then cement, then sand and then metal.
that is the right way to mix cement.
I have been doing it for 25 years.

cheers

yea, im gonna hook the trailer up and go grab the ingredients when i am ready but at this stage it is just the equasion on the bag of pre mix i have that was throwing me.

if i were to order and mix it up in (accumulative total) 20kg amounts following the directions on the bag i would have well over 2 times more product than i need.

i still just dont understand how the company supplies on their product, cubic measurements that add up to less than what applies in the following sentance.

i mean, really how do you make sence of 'this product will do' 600mm x 150mm x 50mm (total .0045 cu meters) or 0.01 cu meters. i added the brackets bit to show how it works out.

to follow those directions
if i made a section in the ground to those measurements i would have over 50% of the product left over provided it will actually fill 0.01 cu meters, which we cant be too certain about because 2 different volumes are described.

AM I STILL MISSING SOMETHING HERE, MY HEAD WILL EXPLODE

Yes have heard of water first then cement then blend
But i go different
Water then blend then cement
Why ???
Well simple once the cement is in theres no turning back
With water and blend only
You can turn of at that point and leave
(For whatever the reason,Smoko,Beer oclock,Horizontal dance even)

Buckets for an accurate measure is a great tip
20 KG concrete 2 X 10L buckets
100 KG blend 10 X 10L buckets
(5:1 Ratio)
