I remember a long time ago a mention in a thread about making/installing a coolant bypass pipe from the back of the head/block to the front to remove that pool of hot water/hear from the back end of the engine, anyone throw any light on that? I think the head had to be drilled and tapped for a brass fitting.

If you wanted to do that, I think there is a bleed hole underneath the exhaust manifold @ no. 6 cylinder, maybe it involved making that larger to allow more flow? But then you risk not enough coolant getting to the other cylinders, i.e. you are reducing the flow through the rest of the block I would think, correct me if I'm wrong.

i havent heard of that but ive seen a few coolant rails with 6 or so tubes tapped into the side of the head to prevent heat buildup and to also to remove any air pockets that could cause cavitation and hot spots.
if this is the thing your after i believe jpc do a kit for it.

Yes man your onto it, i make up the coolant rails and also fit them to engine combos when they get up around 600NM's

If only I had known when I had the head off getting it slightly worked... I would have done it, and I meet your specs, 680Nm Lets wait and see what the new turbo makes....

If anybody has a cracked TD head to get rid of, I would be interested in taking it off your hands in melbourne to have a play with putting in coolant lines.
