Hey guys,
Just picked up a 2008 GU6 ZD30 with 88K on the clock. When we had a look at it, started it and sounded a little noiser on startup but I was aware the startup is generally noiser.
Took it for a spin and came back and shut it off and made the deal. Very happy with how it pulls and drives great.

Now I have it home, pulled into the drive and left it to idle. Sounds noisy compared to my old GUIV ZD30. There seems to be two destinct noises.
The base engine noise is chunky and norma and what I would expectl. But there sounds like a gear noise in the top of the motor. Is this injector noise? Quite chattery almost chain gear type noise. Seems to be more chattery once warmed up.

ye mate, CRD has a few different base notes to the old Di. Has a different top end and the injectors fire differently to the old engine, so different noise to be expected. The CRD should be slightly quieter and have less of that sharp diesel noise to it than the Di from what I have observed.

It is certainly much much quieter in side the cabin. I suspect its the injectors, its a very mechanical constant type sound, just not like I have heard before. She is still under warranty and due for next service in 1000km so will get Cleveland Nissan to check it out.

Cheers

Yep mine does that too Bray - sounds a bit like someone's emptied a bag of nails into the valvegear, although nowhere near as bad for that as a Hinkley Triumph.

I had my intercooler shroud off yesterday, you should hear it without that to muffle some of the racket!

Don't know anything about CRD's but I wonder if a little 2 stroke in the fuel would quieten the pump and injector rattle a bit, certainly works on a DI.

Thanks guys. I gave service department a call today and he confirmed the noise is standard, and he will show me another CRD or two when I drop it off for service next week to confirm they all do it.

My 2007 CRD sounds very similar. Does everyone else's also chatter on shutdown?

Plus oil type can have a effect also the oils age! Maybe change oil/filter with a quality brand and see how it goes.
I will second that, when mypatrols CRD was new, it sounded like a bag of marbles was in the top end until the engine was quite warm - even then there was a bit of noise.

Changed the oil from the Nissan oil to Delo 400 multigrade and it quietened right down from startup.

Im working on the bottom end of the Gateway, so Cleveland nissan a bit out of the way, but have heard great things about them so thought worth the trip. Have tried 2 other dealerships and won't be going back to them.

Probably the "sound difference" between the mechanical and electronic the injectors I reckon. I went from a TD42 to a CRD and just threw away the ear plugs so can't compare to the Di's
