Just came back from a 17000k trip. While away I noticed that when I started the patrol up in the morning, with clutch out, I would get a rattling sound coming from under the gearstick area. Straight to mechanics, well, actually, 4 mechanics. Two said it was the clutch throwout bearing, and two said it was the gearbox. So drove the car 8000ks home. rattle noise is still there. No problems changing gears. Anyone out there had a similar problem? Patrol GQ 4.2 diesel. Thanks guys.

Must be some metal or something that has either unbolted or snapped of, like a cable or simular.

Only way is to check is by opening it all out and diagonising it from there. Shouldn't be too hard man as there are mostly bolts to undo.

Good luck,

mine does the same in a 2.8TD, if i adjust the idle up a bit it goes away as well, I always thought this was caused by the throw out bearing but others say its not

X2 on the clutch Thrust Bearing. Mine has been doing it since I got it in 2006. It is not a reason to pull the clutch unless you need to redo your clutch.

its not the thrust bearing- if it was the noise would go away when your foot isnt on the clutch, and start when you put your foot on the clutch. you are describing an identical problrm to what i had in mine- we opened her up and found that one of the springs had fallen out of the pressure plate and was rattling around in the housing. it was hot even that old a clutch- it was the product of a few hard gear changes- ie sloppy clutch work. the spring eventually jammed and shattered the clutch plate.

do I have a gearbox problem

Now that sounds feasable, what would it entail to open it up to have a look, and could you reccomend someone thats going to be honest about it, ie, not tell me i need a new gearbox.

I had a rattle quite similar. There at idle and dissappeared as the revs increased. I took it to a gearbox specialist and he listened as I moved the car forward and back and at idle and his conclusion was....there is a tension spring in the box which over time loses its tension and rattles. I also found out in reading the manual that my idle was slightly too low so once adjusted correctly, the rattle was not heard. He also made the comment that his toyota had the same prob but his was significantly worse and he wasn't worried about it at all. Mine changes gears with no problems at all so I am not concerned.

Take it to a gearbox specialist and have him listen. The fix was huge and not worth it for my mind.....
