That doesn't normally prevent a DI from starting, just brings up the engine light and a code. I would be checking the ECU for other codes as well.

I still think something else is going on here. The EGR is open at idle until 1200rpm at which time it closes until activated under various conditions as we drive, with EGR closed at idle the only things that happen through disconnection is a code and MAFv rises to a bit over 2v.
Disconnect the plug and see what happens.
My 2 cents worth as a 2000 DI owner since new.

Sounds to me like it’s running out of fuel. You sure you don’t have an air leak somewhere in the fuel system?
That is what I have been trying to tell him, something else is going on here and we now learn filter, primer and water sensor changed.

Thank you all for responding.
Have been under neath vehicle several times from back to front engine bay and have not been able to find any leaks from metal fittings rubber hoses steel lines or from Carter lift pump itself.
What other mods do you have?

Where is your carter lift pump fitted and is it a 4600 or 4601? If you have at the back then you will see any leaks quite clearly, if the pump is mounted under bonnet then it could be sucking air from somewhere near the back. At Idle a 4600 will put out around 4psi fuel pressure, a 4601 will put out around 12psi, so leaks are usually easily seen.
Fit a section of clear hose between the fuel filter outlet and the inlet banjo on the fuel pump, run the pump to see what happens, with air, to bleed the pump crack the inlet banjo, tighten then crack the return line banjo then after fuel runs, tighten banjo then try to start.

Hi Ross,
Yesterday I replaced the carter 4601 lift pump which is mounted at rear with a brand new one in case it was Faulty.
The vehicle has always cold started first pop and will hold idle and will reach operating temps on idle If you drive off it will then start to splatter and stall and will then not start.
Again will cold start next day and idle till you switch off and wait a few minutes then engine will not start.
Now with the new carter lift pump it will start for 2-3 times before spattering less and less then stalling.
Today I have taken IC off and checked spill lines and around injector pump / lines again and can not see any leaks.
Will get some clear hose and check for air in system.
Hi Mate, if you have the IC off then remove glowplugs and crank with a fully charged battery to make sure you have plenty of fuel mist coming out through the GP holes. I'm getting suspicious of pump at this time, hope it isn't!

Not uncommon for catch can to have some moisture in it, especially if humidity has been high, I quite often get a small amount of water in the oil when I drain my catch can.
