Hi All,

This topic has been discussed in earlier threads , but there are some specifics questions I would like to ask around the wiring of the controller to a later model patrol with CRD and Cruise Control.

I have a Tekonsha P3 controller that I will be wiring in and I am wondering if the stoplight wire can be wired in to the 'cold' side of the brake switch or whether this may cause problems with either the cruise control (cancel cruise) or ECU. (There are 2 seperate switches on the brake pedal and I know that I would have to use the one that is for the stop lamp function, not the ASCD).

On a slightly different note, I have a factory towbar and trailer wiring harness fitted. With electric brakes, is there a need to beef-up the earth wire in the factory harness and if so, would going to a chassis earth point be OK, or should it be run back to the battery?

I'm keen to hear what other CRD owners who have installed a controller have done

thanks
Kyle

I've got a Tekonsha Prodigy (the one before the P3) and just wired it according to the instructions. I haven't had any sort of problem with the system. I also have the factory towbar etc and didn't change anything.

Cheers

I re-installed mine the other week from my 2003 ZD30 to my new 2010 4.8 with Cruise, Will get a photo 2morrow as at the brake pedal under the dash is a green and a green/red wire by memory. I think the Red was permament 12v and the green/red was after the switch etc., This is the one you want, easy test with a multimeter, but will get you a photo tomorrow. PS- towed the 3t boat home from Brisbane all good :)

i used to fit them for a living, in the end we started to run the stoplight wire back to the trailer plug to avoid upsetting ecu's etc, never had an issue connecting to the switch on a nissan, but the european crap is a very different story. one thing that is a must is ditch the supplied scotch lock and solder the splice on the brake switch. as for the earth wire, it will need upgrading as the std wire is lucky to run the lights letalone brakes, don't connect to chassis go to the body as the japs have stopped grounding chassis

Some photos, to lazy to crawl up under, but check with your multi meter and one will have 12v permanent, you want the one without, ie. only when you press teh brake pedal , pretty sure it was the green red one. Also the RED wire is coming from my brake controller

I finally got around to wiring the controller up. The only thing I have found is that if you use the manual slide control while accelerating, the engine power is cut putting the vehicle into Limp Mode. I'm not sure if this will be a problem when towing offroad as I suspect most of the times you went to use the manual slide control you would be decelerating or engine braking anyway.
The only scenario I can think of needing to be able to accelerate and brake the trailer at the same time is when heading down a sand dune?
Also, for setting up the braking power output, the user manual instructs you to do 25mph and slide the control to full, so this would have to be at a rolling 25mph, although you have a few seconds before the ECU goes to limp mode

Mine is located to the left of the steering wheel, on the underside of dash moulding, in line with the foot rest and hard up against the centre console.
