Engine Warning light and tacho failure

Can anybody help. Our 1998 GU Turbo Diesel Patrol is having a problem. the engine warning light keeps coming on then a frew moments later the tacho stops working. Then a short time later the light goes off and the tacho starts working again. Sometimes the engine also cuts out but does come back pretty much straight away. this is all happening while you are driving which is a very strange sensation. Any ideas?
