Has anybody fitted an exhaust brake to a Patrol? I look like getting a brand new air operated Hino exhaust brake for a reasonable price, will know tomorrow. It's a 3" type, so should be fairly easy to plumb into the Chev's exhaust system, just after the 2 pipes merge into one, beside the transfer case/gearbox.

I have a permanent air supply and receiver tank, so am hoping 95 psi will be enough to activate it via a solenoid (probably get another ARB air-locker solenoid .....do you think that will work okay?)

I'd be interested in anybody's views.....

Cheers

i know some of the 3 litre Gu's have them as standard (and navaras) but not standard in NZ :( (not sure about AU). i would like one for our utes but it needs to be one of those vac operated ones.

getting a basic one or one of the valved ones?

btw they don't make that roaring truck braking noise, it just hisses a bit.

Sure you're not thinking of the warm up/heat switch activated butterfly in the exhaust of the cold climate european ZD30?

Exhaust Brake

I heard of a bloke who modded one out a dyna truck and grafted it to his ford courirer. It was very effective and low cost because he got it from the wrecking yard.

cheers

I dont quite understand how they work / what they do?

Do they just opperate a butterfly that closes the exhaust off to slow down engine RPM?

exactly. the increase in engine braking means you not useing your brakes so much going down hills. saves overheating the brakes and wear and tear on the brakes.

only uses more fuel if you try to drive with the exhaust brake on ;) most systems have throttle/clutch switches to turn the exhaust brake off when use the throtle/clutch.

there is some concern with high performance deisels that you get an EGT increase when you but the exhaust brake on after climbing a big hill. however i think it can also be an advantage by slowing the cooling of the motor. pistons that get heated to the max then rapidly cooled can crack.

i've driven the odd small truck with exaust brakes and it is handy. family member had several big rigs and its a must on them. it saves a lot of wear on the brakes.

don't forget thes exhaust brakes are not jack brakes/compresion brakes. these don't make much/any noise.
