Excuse the simple question - new to this game!

Was thinking of getting some second hand factory steel rims (either the ute style or wagon style) and getting them sand blasted and powder coated in black.

Any issues I should consider?

Do I ask to get every surface powdercoated - ie "inside" and out?

cheers

IIRC one of the other members said that powder coating was not a good idea for rims. I'm looking at acid dipping and then enamel coating my spares - a set of sunraysias as well as a set of Ser 80 rims. I'm looking at doing both in black...

again, the OP seemed to think that powder coating wouldn't stand up as well as re-enameling or painting. The bloke I got the sunraysias off was also goi8ng to powdercoat but changed his mind. So maybe there's more to this to find out??

Hmmmmm

Have searched about on here and some people seem to just spray them with spray cans! I suppose if can get the powder coating done cheap enough then can just re-do them if they ever need it.

Will ask at the powdercoat place - see what he reckons.

If the finish is anything like, say my steel bullbar, then I would think it will stand up pretty well - maybe not from direct thumps with rocks, but would try to avoid that!

Have read that the ute style rims might be less prone to cracking - but I'm not going to be doing anything too extreme, and won't be loading up too much - I prefer the wagon style, with the larger holes. Found a pic of a black factory steel (wagon) wheel - looks great:

shouldn't powder coat alloy wheels.

steel is usually OK.

honestly though you're better off hitting them with some basic prep and spraying them in an engine enamel or wheel paint from Supercheap. That way you can touch them up if you scratch the hell out of them or if you decide the black look isn't for you it can be changed easily.

I have powder coated black 80 series rims and a set of black GU rims powder coated too.

I bought the 80 series rims already done and second hand, they had been used on a race truck and had stood the test of time fairly well. I thought about and went to the trouble with one rim of just spraying over the top to "Touch up" the rims..... Damn! Dont do that!!! Powder Coat DOES NOT LIKE TO BE PAINTED!

I ended up wiping the spray off and buffing the powder coat, looks fine.

Powder Coat is as Tough as GUTS but you cant touch it up.

Paint is OK and you can freshen up quickly and on the car.

Side by side, you would not tell the difference from 3m away.

Well I've put just one in for powdercoating to start (the spare). See how it looks and costs and take it from there with the others.

Anyway this is all superficial stuff isn't it? Once I get this sorted I can start saving up for the good stuff - like a 3" exhaust!

cheers

They've got all the usual nicks, dings n scratches. But still look alright. $30 a throw at Coastal powder coaters.
thats pretty good, did that include a basic cleanup of the rims? deburr, kill the surface rust etc....

I wouldn't mind doing the sunraysias but was put off by the prev owner, from what people are saying here, its not as bad as he made it.

Just got my one rim back from the powdercoaters - looks great but he charged me $60!

I asked if I bring in four to be done at once whether it would be cheaper - actually, I sort of stated "it would be wouldn't it?". He reckons it wouldn't!

Takes just as long to sandblast. $240 for four rims - forget it!!

One of the guys at the place says they charge sandblasting at $240 per hour? I know doctors, teachers and engineers who don't charge as much as that!

Can anyone direct me somewhere in Melbourne eastern suburbs cheaper? Like %50 cheaper?!

IMHO, just buy new quality rims @ about $80 each. Went through the keeping my rims and powdercoating them excercise. Was going to cost about $50 a rim + the inconvenience of running the rims around town etc. Buying new ones was heaps easier and I got 15x8's instead of keeping my 15x7's.

Outlander.... where can you get new black rims @ $80 each???

I would be interested to know, so I can give them a call...
nearly anywhere should get you 15x8's for that price. 16x8 is a different kettle of fush

Back on topic in case anyone searches. Mine was rusting, so i rubbed them back, primed them, then painted them satin black. Is just temporary until i get a new set of tyres, but have had a hard life and the paint doesn't scratch.
