I went to replace my front bump stops and have found that the entire bit the bump stop bolts into is rusted out. The rest of the spring seat that holds the spring up looks ok. I knew I had a bit of rust in there, but I didn’t realise it was this bad. What to do? Can I just get a plate welded in, or do I need to replace the whole lot?

Looks nasty but not a show stopper.
If it was me I'd clean it up and get a plate welded in, then give the whole lot a good rust prevention treatment.

Remove those thin cover plates permanently, that way you can hose them out easily in future.

I cut the whole bottom out and welded in a plate. I’ve used half of a 3mm thick galvanised framing bracket from bunnings. As you can see, it leaves a lot of gap for better drainage now. Just gotta prime and paint now.

Well done.
Mine had rust in the same location, just not nearly as bad. After cleaning it up I drowned it in a mixture of Penetrol and cold gal before spraying it black. The rust has never returned.

yeah noticed the same with mine when i did suspension upgrade last year, it wasnt that bad only the bolt on the bumpstop and nut were corroded.

a tip for everyone else take them friggin covers off the top of the tower and throw em to buggery, at least you can keep all the fine buildup out of there and hose it out when washing, ol mates i work on was the same and pissed his off too.
