hey guys ive been welding for about 6 years now and want to get my qualifications for welding but dont have the time to go to tafe or anything to get them, does anyone know if you can be assessed on your skills and passed?

There is a thing called "Recognition of Prior Learning" which should apply to tafe courses and knocks off a lot of course time if you know your stuff. Ask the faculty about it if going that way.

You'll need to do a test to get your welding tickets which are really the only quals that matter for an occupation as a professional welder and unless you have practised before hand they might not be as easy to pass as you think as there is a practical and theoretical component. Along with this, you need to have a certain amount of recognised industry experience although you won't necessarily require any prior formal qualifications. Tafes run certification courses of one or two nights a week for around 9 weeks, and there are private providors that may do similar courses in your area or just examinations only. Probably best to contact the WTIA (Welding Technology Institute of Australia WTIA) office in your state and make enquiries as they will have all the answers and should be able to point you towards the relevant people.
