Hi Guys

Looking for some advice on the gearbox for my 1997 GQ Patrol 2.8L TD. Everything is tight and gears change well. I am experiencing extra noise at idle with the clutch disengaged (when I put the clutch in again the noise disappears). A noise is noticeable in 3rd & 5th gear when driving.

Wondering if you know what it might be, how to fix or the possible cost of fixing it (in Perth area).

Cheers :)

I had this when I put a fancy synthetic oil in. Changed back to an everyday Castrol gear oil, it is heaps quieter.
I've had my GQ since new and the gearbox has always had a "quiet rattle" at idle.

These gearboxes have pre set tensioner which runs on 4th (which is also input gear) and maybe another one on the counter shaft to stop chatter at idle. These tensioners basically look like two gears around 2mm wide that are close together and they loose there tension. I rebuilt my gearbox doing bearings and inner races only and that idle noise is still their. ( I rebuilt my box due to worn main shaft bearings)

Thanks guys - It looks like I'll have to get a gear box overhaul and get some new bearings in it. One of the guys at the transmission shop also said that a little bit of rollover noise at idle is usual once things loosen up a bit after the rebuild.

I get this noise all the time when idling. Think it must be pretty normal. Although I should be due for a new clutch soon...325km on mine :) i know right?

Thread is old but still relevant. 1st response was correct. After believing noise in my gearbox was clutch thrust bearing, gearbox finally stopped with a bang and only had 4th gear left. Investgation revealed front bearing on countershaft totally mashed. Only bits left of the bearing race. Probably metal bits in the box but haven't opened it up yet. Just removed front cover. Clutch thrust bearing was perfect. So I had plenty of warning that failure would come.
