Hi,

Hi guys another newbie to this forum. I have a 1990 safari GQ td42 auto. Its been my ride for 5years now and been loving it. My tranny is due for an oil change. I just wanna ask what is the oil spec/grade of oil is recommended for the auto tranny and how many liters of oil does the auto contain? It has 220K on the clock. I know that u guys usually put fully synthetic atf but in my case i cant afford it atm. Curently this brand of oil is available in my area and might use it if u guys would approve to it. thanks!:p

me personally and with no real reason but i prefer mostly castrol oils. not saying that this is a bad product, but i find castrol to be a good brand and has lasted the test of time. imo
and as for quantity, sorry couldnt tell ya but if you go into a repco or along the lines of that and say how much oil and what should i use for this and they should be able to point you in the right direction, although always add a little less and add, alot easier than having to drain to much out.
ps if you have in your details where you live makes it easier to post a reply

im from the philippines. my safari is an import from japan and most locally made safari's here have manual tranny so service centers dont know much bout the safaris auto trany. anyone know how many liters of atf is needed if i drop the oil pan? if it is only 4-5 liters i might use mobil1 synthetic atf. would u guys recommend flushing the trany?

we use valvoline MAXLIFE ATF in patrols at my workshop. If you check the actual book, it tells you to use TQ95/ 95LE in these transmissions, but we've found the synthetic MAXLIFE oil to be a great oil, and i'd highly recommend it.My auto maverick sees it fair share of offroad abuse, and the fluid is still red, after countless forest runs, lowrange- first gear climbs, towing trailers fully loaded. If you're not sure, see your local auto trans specialist.

Thanks for the replies guys. already had the trany serviced and used 10 liters of Caltex texamatic atf.rated dexron3/mercon(by recommendation of LUDWIG):). i had the pan dropped and the metal screen filter cleaned. found some little metal shavings on the pan close to the magnet. is that normal? the oil i got from dropping the pan is approx 5liters then i ask the mechanic to flush the remaining oil that is inside the torque converter tru the tube going in the radiator.now the trany is all good again:)

I cant remember where i sourced this info from , but you can use the Aussie Dexron III successfully , Not the Japanese Dexron III as its only equivalent to an Aussie Dexron II and would not have the suitable additive package

Castrol Transmax Z is a full synthetic Dexron III

Never did get a reply from Wholesale Automatics, so did some digging. Found some stuff, though
Transmax Z is at supercheap now for 55 bucks
Nulon "Full Synthetic Multi Vehicl ATF" in the gold bottle
Penrite ATF 95 LE
Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc 75000 KM.
Supercheap may have have all or none. LOL! I dont think they would have the Penrite ATF,well they dont at my local shop, anyway.
Can anyone verify if a GQ torque convertor actually has a drain plug? It would save a heap of mess.

I have a question, LOL! If I were to drain the trans sump, then start the engine, and drain it again, and so on. Would this work? Would this be a way of getting out most-if not all -of the old fluid? I ask, because I dont want to pull off the hoses, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for something I can do. Plus- I'm slack. :)
