Hi all.

Just going through assembling front gu diff after installing an older style gq arb locker.
I have read that people need to trim 5mm off the end of the axles so they slide in and seat correctly. I have found bolting the hub back together that it won't seat by about 5mm.

Can anyone confirm this is the correct fix?

Have done a search and came up with mixed opinions

Thanks.

I have read this on the forum too. I think it was said by one of the senior guys and was mentioned in a air V electric locker post. from memory that was a long thread too. I'll have a look around.

Thanks mate. I am reading mixed reviews. I can't see why it would be a problem but just want to be sure...

some do it that way,bit rough.can you see if locker has a cross pin that could be machined down? or in the centre can it be milled out

if cutting axles I would do it on a metal band saw or similar with cutting fluid to keep the heat down on the splines and allow a few mm for a bit of end float.

i researched all this when fitting a set of dirty 30's to my gq diff with autolocker

Found one.

Try searching "ARB axle" or "ARB axles" or "ARB shorten" or "ARB shortened"

The one I remember reading was an ARB install and the axles fouled on the 4 pinion block. the narrator mentioned 5mm reduced and didn't seem too worried.

At home I would be planning on just using a thin disc 5" grinder and keep it cool with running water over it in short exchanges. Cut/water - cut/water.
Measure twice and cut once.

Goodluck

EDIT: Hi Gasburner, simultaneous posting again haha great minds think alike...

mine has been in like this for 11 years, I cut it with a grinder and 1mm disc. Heat is so low it will not affect the heat treatment. If you can get the model after air locker the cross pins can be changed so the trust block can be removed. I just take 1 of each CV with axles cut already.

Righto, got it sorted.
The spline on a gu axle is longer than a gq. When sliding into an early gq locker the axle fowls on the torque blocker. The section of spline that fowls is actually through the locker and out the other side into the Centre of the locker cavity. Cutting it off is of no consequence.
Trim down 5mm, chamfer the edge on the linisher and fits perfect. It is quite common and simple to do. And no need to disassemble centers and lockers, which actually requires more specialist tools and room for error.

Easy.
