Hi crew,

I currently have an 89 LWB GQ TB42 carby running on duel fuel (impco system put in last year).

I love the beast and am learning about it all the time. However, I am chasing some more power for hills, overtaking and just a bit more guts. I predominantly drive it on the road but do occasional camping trips that justify having the 4X4.

Anyhoo, I am looking into two options right now...

1. Buying this 400 chev conversion:

and having someone do the swap as I dont have the know how.

2. Fitting an AXT turbo kit. This is the response i got from them, seems crazy expensive but:

"Hi,

The turbo hardware kit is priced at $3500 inc GST.
The intercooler kit is priced at $2500 inc GST.
We charge $650 inc GST for basic installation at our Dandenong workshop for these 2 items.

For your distributor. I would recommend sourcing this yourself from an auto parts recycler, as this would be the most viable option.

For a Gas Research System, a full underbonnet kit is worth approx $1900 inc GST.

For us to do Ignition and Gas, we would need the vehicle to quote on this correctly.

You can run the Impco System, however you will need to modify this, depending on boost pressures and the actual system.

Normally, on straight LPG, with an intercooler, you can safely run approx 8-10PSI without any problems and this should make 50-60% more torque and power over standard.

Straight LPG is really the only option if you want the vehicle to pass a test, however I would not be able to guarantee any pass, as these engines are "dirty" even in standard trim...

Regards,
Andrew"

So with this information I guess my question is which will end up cheaper to do and which would make the car a better drive for my purposes?

Appreciate any advice on which direction to take and other options than the AXT package to turbo it?

Sorry for the long post.

Cheers.

That turbo install price list is pretty expensive mate, $2500 just for the cooler what type is it? I'm sure blokes on here have done it for half that price. Get all the bits together even use second hand if you want to keep the cost down and get someone to do the labour.

TD42 turbo conversion won't be cheap and if your looking for power like a V8 or petrol turbo i think you will be disappointed with the td42 turbo diesel especially in stock form, stock it probably wouldn't be any quicker than your tb42.

I'd go a V8 of some description, 400 chev in a GQ would be nice

Well you need a turbo, not sure on specs of the petrol turbos.

A manifold, and of the diesel ones will work high or low mount the choice is yours.

If your going gas, most guys run twin B2 convertors and a gas research throttle body.

Then there are things like intake piping, oil lines, exhaust, inter cooler etc

Join Mudrhino and looki up cooki monsters build thread, shows most of the stuff you need..

Td42 turbo - easy 120 rwkw and 12L/100km thats been nice to the motor. tb42 with a turbo is gonna be thirsty. $5000 would see a engine and turbo fitted doing the work your self.
or cheepest options would be putting an efi system on the tb42 or putting a tb45 in

Personally i'd go the V8, I had a 350 chev in a MQ and it was awesome on road and it had more balls than it knew how to handle, it wasn't the best for trying to go slow down hills in low for the really rough stuff because it just wanted to go but it was awesome for the up hill stuff, so much torque and towing my 2T boat didnt know it was there until i tried to stop, lol.

Good luck getting 120rwkw out of a GQ pump, thats almost the limit of the GU pump with the larger head in it..

Ls1 motor went on flea bay last week for $1800 with loom and computer I have heard that you can run these with the minimum computer sensor input mainly air flow and crank angle. I have a mate that injected his TB and even running microtech computer and upgrade injectors cost a fair bit when you compare money spent to performance gained and you havent put the turbo on yet. Even engineered the ls1 would end up cheaper.
