Ive got my self a gq shorty and i want to go from duel fuel to diesel

im on my p plates and i want to get opinions on how i should go about the swap all things concidered

how do i go about the diesel swap, do i swap to a td42t from a gu and have it mod plated, go to a td42 from a gq have it plated and install the turbo system after or go to a td42 from a gq then turbo then plate?

i want opinions on price, p plate laws and just the swap in general.

not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure an engine conversion is classified as a modification and there for we (p platers) arnt aloud to drive not 100% sure, but if it was say registered in one of your parents names then changed to yours after conversion might get around it ?

best bet would to be contact main roads or just go onto the P plate law section on their website, have to be something about it on there !

Mate, assuming you are in Queensland, unfortunately for you the only option is to swap to a NA TD42 from a GQ Patrol. Swapping motors in a vehicle that had the replacement motor fitted as standard from FACTORY only requires updating the registration and tags on the vehicle with the new engine number. The GQ never came to Aus as FACTORY turbo, but quite a few were delivered as DEALER fitted turbo.

You will have to swap in a NA TD42 and then illegally turbocharge the motor, unless you can argue (and some successfully have) that the TD42T was in fact delivered in the Y60 Patrol to NZ and in small quantaties to the Australian market. However, you have a long and hard road with TMR if you do.

Cheers,
Mick

Shorty did come standard with a td42 that's what makes me want to swap to that and risk having the turbo with no mod plate.

Surely I could swap to a td42t and show that it's fairly low powered and I did it for the reliability
The SWB Patrol came with the TD42 but not the TD42T. You cannot legally drive your Patrol with a turbocharged TD42 on your P-Plates without an exemption. And no, they don't care about reliability or power. What is written in law is how TMR and QPS operate. Same reason you can't have a 253 Holden V8 in a HQ 1-tonner, even though the L67 V6 in the VS Commodore whoops it for power.

Bennos is right in that you can own/modify/build whatever however you cannot drive a car with a modification plate on your P-plates in Queensland. My advice to you is to either attempt an exemption or swap the motor, update the registration forms and turbocharge the motor and hide. If the police pull you over and check the vehicle you may be okay. If TMR pull you over, bend over and kiss your arse goodbye.

Mate I've gone through all of this obtaining an exemption to drive a V8. I have an exemption and have held it for a while now, but TMR will follow their guidelines down to the last letter. In your case, the T in TD42T.

Quick example; A '90 Third Gen Camaro either had the L69HO 305 or the LT1 350. You CANNOT swap the L69 305 for a LG4 305, even though the only difference is the camshaft, exhaust manifolds and heads. Because the vehicle never came with the LG4 from factory in that year, you CANNOT install that motor without a modification plate. As soon as you have a modification plate, you CANNOT drive the vehicle on your Queensland P-Plates.

Cheers,
Mick

im pretty sure a td42t would still only require advising dot of the new engine number. so i reckon you will get away with it,
also from my minimal knowledge you can own anything even on your p plates but cannot drive them on the road under p plates. so its not transport you have to worry about its the boys in blue. dot will pass anything as long as its safe. and they are happy with it and it fits within their guidelines

You should be right scottyo, I'm looking at doing the same conversion now and am in Vic as well. Pretty sure all you need to do is tell vic roads new engine number and in regards to aftermarket turbo in 100% it does not need to be engineered for that here in Vic . And also in regard to p plate rules you can drive any turbo or v8 diesel, I'm always driving my old mans v8 turbo diesel cruiser and never even questioned.
