Hey guys, Just wanting to know if anyone has experienced a similar problem. I have a TD42, intercooled, running a GT3071 turbo. Runs awsome, but when you get to 1800rpm there is a loud grinding noise that comes from the engine bay. Had a quick look today but nothing seems to be loose? Just after some opinions before I take it to the diesel mechanic?????

I think its the gearbox. I had it on the Mk too, and from what i have read here, it seems to be a patrol thing so i dont really worry about it. Could be something different on yours though.

Yeah seriously, whats with this TD42t gearbox rattles at really low rpm,s? Both of mine do it the exact same... What is it actually? The clutch or the actual gears or what... ANYONE ? ?

The noise your describing Barry sounds a lot like that damn gearbox rattle... Clutch or bell housing etc.. AND yes sorry, not 1,800 rpms, its more at around 1,200.. Your problem sounds like something else..

Don't think it would be gearbox rattle, not at 1800 anyway.
maybe check water pump? and other belt driven accessories

my gq is making gearbox rattle noise as well,im thinking its the input shaft bearing

check that the bottom of your radiator is sitting in its mounts correctly and the bottom mounts arent bent.
check your fan shroud isnt loose too.

I found the intercooler making contact with inlet manifold on my 4.2 causing a vibration/ grinding sound to come through the firewall. Check the intercooler is clear.
My gearbox makes the growl down at low revs in all gears also.
