Hi all,
I am here to give a good word for Stephen of "Penrith Diesel Service".

I have a 4.2 Turbo GU wagon that would not rev much over a short period of time. It seemed to be starved of fuel and eventually not rev over 1500rpm. If pushed further, then puff white smoke. I have been now told that is due to being staved of fuel that also retards the timing some how.

SYMPTOMS
* Engine will rev less and less with a miss in the higher revs or under load
* White/Blue smoke out of exhaust when free revving
* Loss of power
* Feeling of OMG how will I get home

CAUSE
* Discount fuel

FIX
* Under fuel inlet side of banjo fitting on injection pump is a spring and then a small gauze filter, this sucker is full of crap that needs replacing

Stephen of Penrith Diesel Service was very honest and told me the likely problem over the phone and offered to fix it for a great price. Unlike other injection companies that want to rip me a new one, none of which suggested this common problem even though they should have known being "specialists".

That's my 2 bob.

PS. He does not do any common rail work.

Good to hear good stories. probably about $40-50 to undo 1 bolt and remove filter and refit...

Last 3 vehicles I have checked never had them installed, 2 x GQ and 1 x GU.

Have also heard that cheap fuel filters causing issues over time... Fibers from filter end up getting stuck in the guaze filter.

I may have over reacted regarding poor fuel. This car has travelled 270000km and this may be the first time it was replaced but I don't know. I use Ryco filters and some crap must get through the paper filters.
This filter is tinny, when the fuel inlet banjo bolt is removed there will be a spring visible. Remove the spring and there is a tinny thimble shaped filter inside the pump. I could not see it when I had a look but the service tech used his modified screw driver and plucked it out.

My ol 95 coil cab was suppose to have one aswell, and was not there. Never really had a drama with the inj or pump apart from someone before me thought that it needed more fuel with ext and zorst. I had it for 5 years with countless adjusting of full fuel/load screw. Economy as an average, try 20l/100km. It was cheaper long distance to take my 1 tonner!! Still miss my ol girl but.
