Connect one end to the metal part of the body and the other end to the white wire, ignition on, does the test light, light up or multimeter read 12 volts?

Sounds easy enough i'll give it a whirl
When i place it on a metal part of the car - can that have paint on it (had to ask as i am pretty stupid at this stuff) ;)

Had the same problem in my 2009 GU.
Followed the instructions above and took the switch apart. Fairly straightforward, if just a bit delicate. Simply cleaned of the carbon (black dots on the contacts) with some alchohol and sandpaper and put it back together. Works a treat!
Here are some pics of the inside. You can see where the carbon builds up and where it has been cleaned.
Just be aware that the ball bearings must sit in the center of each rocker, not on the side as seen in the pic.
