Hello all interested parties, I have a question that I would like answered honestly, I have a GU 4.8 Nissan Patrol Auto 2004, we are setting off around Australia and would like to know if anyone out there has any Fuel Economy figures/tips whilst towing a >2.8 tonne caravan. I realise there are a few variables but just want a base line that other people may be getting. Ps. I don't want to know how much your 3.0 or 4.2 use either. Cheers

I tow my car with trailer 2Ton ( so lighter then your's), and lowest i got was ~20L when used with 98oct petrol, with 91 and 95 octane i get average about 22/23L.
With your weight, id imagine around 25L

4.8 auto. 3 inch lift (measures 4 inch) and 285/70/17 weighs 3.1 and tow a kimberley camper (1200 - 1500) around North Queensland ad get 25l/100 not babying it and sitting over 100 on the highway. Comparison, I get 19.5 without camper doing the same trips.

Might as well take the KK everywhere with those figures...

I had a 2003 Auto on vapour injected gas with 2inch lift, bullbar and roof crossbars.

I towed a 2600kg wake boat with it. Fuel usage on gas was typically about 32L/100km worst was north of 45L/100km into a howling 45degree headwind. But I kept the foot into it at 100kph. A 3.0 diesel wouldn't have been able to maintain more than 80kph into that wind!!

Take about 10% off for petrol usage.

I loved my 4.8, I should have kept it for weekend play!

Towing your 2800kg caravan I would work on using somewhere around 30L/100km of petrol if driven reasonably sensibly.

Have a 2003 4.8 l used as tow vehicle only.Van is full van 4 wheeler and I get 22to 24 sitting on 100km/hr. Always tow in 4th use 5th on long downhill runs. Also run extra cooling on the return line of transmission. After you have towed with a 4.8 you would never go back to a 3l TD. I also have a Y62 and its awesome.Better economy than the 4.8 and about the same as an LC200 towing. I reckon I can buy a lot of fuel for $30K.
