Hi all,
I bought my first patrol back in november 2010. Had a fair few issues but one major one in question. It seems that sometimes when i take off the car takes off in second and drives in 2nd. but it only does it sometimes. other times it drives fine. Has anyone had anything similar?

Also its on gas and I was just wondering how many kms other people get out of a tank of gas.
Ive got a 4.2 ltr. and the gas tank is 120 litres and im lucky to get 250ks a tank.

Cheers

Hi mate, with your first problem I have seen one with a similar problem (just taking off in second)which i'm pretty sure it ended up being the trans computer (ECU), so that might be something worth looking into.
I also have a 4.2lt which is on gas but mine is a manual and i'm getting about 400km to 80-90lt of gas. So yours seems a bit excessive, is it standard or does it have a lift or big tyres ect, that might be causing poor economy?

for that price id rip the thing apart your self and send the head into a specialist to get him to resurface it and crack test it then assemble it again at home do it over two weekends one to rip apart clean ect then the other to reassemble and then go play on sunday

Maybe he means the spark plug is seized in the head, so he has been quoted to replace the head too. If it's on gas then maybe the head is cracked. TB's don't seem to like gas, although I have a different theory on that.

Tb42 s are the easiest motor to work on just take the head off and get it fixed at a head shop or engine reconditioner as there is no timing to do it just unbolt and reassamble if you feel comfindante save yourself some money

.......looking like the 2k was a great price. We started Wednesday.... So far everything that can go wrong has. got the head back yesterday with the new bolts that he swears are the best. got the monotorque gasket set. everything ready to go in today. we were torquing the head bolts and SNAP... number 23 on the 3rd sequence. 67 nm. now we have to replace the head bolts and the gasket. on a sunday....Any ideas on how to get the bolt end out of the block?

If you're lucky the bolt won't be tight in the block. You could try drilling the bolt with reverse direction drills and might be lucky enough for it to wind out while drilling. Otherwise once it's drilled you could use EZ-outs or spiral extractors.

Well, we took everything apart....(much to the hubbies disgust). The bolt come out with a pair of pliers, it wasn't tight at all. Couldn't find any head bolts anywhere today or a head gasket so we decided to re-use the head gasket and re-use one of the old bolts. everything went well after this. Just have a few more hoses to hook up then we should be right, Thanks to every one for your help. fingers crossed for tomorrow morning.
