Heard a bit of a tinny noise driving the other day (sounded like a loose bracket on the exhaust) got home and let the car sit for a while and checked later on didn't find what it was but thought would check fluids whilst there... opened the radiator and it was like an airstone in there.. minute bubbles which caused it to froth... checked from cold the next morning and same again.... car hasn't overheated, oil is fine, coolant appears fine, not smoking and no sweet smell from the exhaust.. however the car has done 295K's and is on LPG for the past 10yrs at least... hoping its nothing, expecting a blown gasket and dreading a cracked head....

getting a TK test done next week.. anything else i can do/check in the meantime?

Would I also be right in saying 800-1000 for a gasket and 2200+ for head?? (Seen complete heads somewhere for about $1700)

Mate the head on a TB is very easy to pull off and inspect/repair/replace.

Only need basic tools and allow about 4hrs if you havent done it before.

There is no cam timing to worry about just the dizzy.

Head gasket is cheap, use VRS or genuine nissan and a can of holymar to prep the gasket. Head gasket would only be 150 maybe, dont remember coz my old man had kit lying around when I needed it.

My head was cracked from no6 to no4. Welding was an option but a new casting from nissan was 1600bux then a couple of hundred for valve seats and machining and job done.

I retorqued the head after I got some temp into the block, good as new with 350,000kms on the bottom end.

Heaps of threads on how to do it. Try ebay for gasket, even change over heads.

Bursons for the gaskets mate, 150ish for a full VRS kit, Easy enough job, pretty straight forward, Crack testing and valve tests are usually around the $100 mark, I payed $150 for mine to be crack tested, leak tested and Faced.
I got a hold of a Allheads head from a mate for $300 as it has an extra cooling port on the back of the head where they are prone to cooking.
Being on LPG for so long i'm surprised it hasn't already spat a gasket or 2 out or cracked.
Pm me if you need any info on pulling the head off or putting it back on mate.
Cheers,
Deneo.

thanks guys.. TK Test being done on Monday as wife has organised with one of her customers who is a mechanic.. will wait and see. he did say however that starting it on gas can cause air to be introduced into the cooling system.. but firstly check thermostat, water pump and then gasket etc.. so depending on the results..

Will defo keep Express heads in mind!!

Cheers

TK Test done yesterday and no exhaust in the coolant. Suspect either thermostat or waterpump or gas converter but mechanic says no point in replacing as yet as all seems to be fine.. So so far looking at $25 in total.. (still gonna keep the couple of grand set aside for the inevitable one day)

My head gasket was leaking coolant into all cylinders from the cold side water galleries. Tk head check came up good. I have a bore scope so that's how I picked it up due to a build up of coolant on the pistons. Took the head off and set it away to get checked. It required all new valves and seats and opt for a second hand recon head. Sprayed the head gasket with copper gasket spray and installed. All good and later when I got the cash will redo my old head and freshen up the bottom end, maybe for a turbo app. :)

Water loss and I pressure tested it and no leaks. It would have a slight miss when cruising and was a little hard to start in the morning when left over night. I probably could of gotten away with a re torque of the head bolts. The head gasket I pulled off it was sprayed with gasket spray either which wouldn't of helped.

Cheers

If you can do the job yourself Its very easy. I just Unbolted the manifolds and pushed them to the sides. Timed up the engine so on tdc, removed dissy, rocker cover, rockers and all the head bolts and it's off. Give it to a head place and get it all tested, surfaced and replace whatever needs doing, shouldn't cost more than $1200 I reckon with gaskets. And remember gasket spray
