Hi all,

I currently have Stedi H4 LED globes installed in my patrol which I only fairly recently purchased thinking being 2000 lumen I could do legally (idiot) and want to go back to Halogen to be legal. I'm looking at Philips & Narva globes and wondering firstly, people seem to say you need to upgrade the wiring in GQ's but unsure about GU's when going a 100 or 120+ globe due to the current draw, is this the same for GU's?

Also are there any halogen globes which give off the same colour light to LEDs? This is due to my bullbar having LED DRL & LED parkers.

Any recommendations much appreciated!

Cheers,
Brad

Have a look at the watts I think you'll find it's the same current draw as standard lights. Usually the 30 , 50 100 + etc etc have bluish coloured glass and the higher the number the less time they seem to last I usually stay around 60 +.

When I tested them a few years ago, I found the +50 (or whatever they were) 60 watt globes were a lighter colour than my old 100w globes. But they wewre not brighter in terms of output. I stayed with the 100's.

Once you go over 100 watts you draw more current and produce more heat, but the light output does not go up in proportion. 100 watts is about the limit of efficiency, according to Hella Australia.

That's good info thanks Shane. Did you upgrade your wiring when going for the bigger globe?

You should do the headlight wiring upgrade anyway on a GQ. Instead of passing all the current the headlights draw through the tiny little contacts in the stalk, fit a relay and heavier gauge wire.

Your headlight/indicator stalk will thank you for it.

Just checking are you wanting to increase the watts or the brightness of the lights not sure if it gets mixed up but say a 100+ globe doesn't draw more power it's just 100% brighter than a standard globe so no reason to upgrade wiring harness. Or is the wiring loom that bad from the factory that you get a significant increase in light output just by replacing it and leaving the standard globes in.

Marginal wire size (as is standard for OEM -- every microstrand of copper they can save, multiplied by a lot of wires in each vehicle, multiplied by the volume of vehicles saves a lot of money).

And most importantly, the Y60 doesn't have relays fitted in the headlight circuits. So every amp your headlights draws flows through the tiny contacts in the stalk. Hence why Y60s are well known for having problems in the indicator/headlight stalk.
