Hi,

I want to upgrade my GU 2.8 to a TD42 engine.

This engine seems to be the best choice for the Patrol.

I use the car often for towing a 3.5to trailer so i need a lots of torque at low rpms.

My goal are 550 NM from the TD42 from about 1600rpm to 3500 rpm.

I have read a lot in the forum but i can not find exact informations how to reach this.

I thought of a Turbo Kit from ASE Turbo for the TD42.

But there is a choice of several turbos.

I dont know which would be the best choice for my needs.

Which other mods are needed to reach my torque or more?

I thought of the ASE Turbo and Intercooler Kit and a 3" Mandrel exhaust.

I hope somebody can help me, iam from Germany and here is nobody who has a real idee of tuning this engine.

I did a turbo add on with my TB42 (petrol) and we fitted a turbo off a 6Lt Volvo Diesel truck engine, the rebuild pf the turbo cost around $600.00 and that covered the seals and floating bush and rebalance and it has boost from around 1000rpm (mind you we have not run it a lot) "waiting to Dyno"
I have not found out what size turbo it is, but I will try and get back to you on this as it has made the Patrol more of a G Force weapon and from what I can tell at this point super great on fuel.
The turbo has the same exhaust matting face as any other by eye, but we had to fit a external waist gate.
Here is a quick photo.
Good luck with your quest (I cant see why people dont try commercial truck turbo's as these kits are all way over priced)

550Nm over such a big range will be expensive.
Search for posts by me, yyou will see what you need to get close to what you want.
you will need a large intercooler and 20 psi of boost, maybe more.

I think for you in germany the cost will be the same to fit a large Audi or Mercedes petrol V8.

It's not just the turbo and i/c, you probably need to mod the injection pump to deliver the fuel it'll need. Still, if this is your goal, and money is available - why not, the TD42 is a great motor !

I dont want to buy a Audi, Audi has got no good car for towing.

Mercedes is the only choice the G but this car with big diesel or petrol costs over 60000€ used.

The Volvo 6l Turbo would be nice, i hope you can make a dyno soon.

V8 is no choice for me because i need TÜV here in Germany to drive it on the roads.

With a V8 Diesel in the Patrol you have no chance.

The Turbo should spool up at low RPMS so that i get my torque at 1800-2000 RPMS till 3500 RPMS.

Any ideas?

I want to install a big front mount intercooler, too.

Is this torque possible with the original internals of the TD42?

in order for someone to select a turbo, he/she would need the maps for the turbos... Then based on the horsepower goal plus some other info about the engine, you can select the correct turbo for the RPM and efficiency range.

I got a gt2860rs I have roughly 700lb of torque at 1600rpm and 580lb
of torque at 3400rpm, max is 800lb and 125.6hp

Are your LBs motor LBs?? That would be 950 NM from engine??

I want to get 150 rwhp.

The most important is to get Torque at low RPMS.

So iam not sure which mods i need to reach this or which turbo is best for.

If you can, go with a GU (y61) td42, they have larger conrods and gudgeon pins, and also a larger Injector pump. From the info you have us I would probably stick with a gt2871 or 2860 with a nice big front mount, or water to air intercooler, 3 inch exhaust and a high flowed air box.

The power and torque figures should be pretty close to the figures you want without really blowing out in price.

If you went a bigger turbo it would be mandatory to mod your IP and a different air box altogether, and would most likely be too laggy and undriveable for towing anyway.
