Morning from the US
I am a long time Safari/Patrol Owner, Ive had 5 or 6 over the years. I'm an importer in the US.
My current daily driver is a rare beast, Its a 94 Safari AD (UN Spec) NA TD42 24volt Automatic with 7,000 kms, No, seriously it has 7,000 kms.
I bought it 6 months ago, it was apparently a never delivered UN vehicle. It was driven 15kms a month and serviced every 6 months.
It is literally new in the wrapper.

Here is my problem, it starts fantastic no matter what them outside temp, glow plugs work a charm. Runs beautifully.
When the outside temp nears freezing it still starts beautifully but after 2 or 3 minutes it wantS to DIE.
If it just sitting running it will gradually start to drop rms from 900 to stall like it is running out of fuel, then a very hard restart. then feels like its running on 4 or 5 cylinders until it clears its throat. Blows lots of dark smoke while trying to get it to rev back up
If I am driving it after start it runs fine, but if i let off the throttle even at 60kms it will drop rpm's and die. If I come to a stop, same thing.
When cold it can also start to die even being driven hard at 100km/ph
ONE other Item, While it is idling and starting to die, if I depress the priming pump every 2 or 3 seconds it stays running
It takes reaching full operating temperature before it will stop acting this way.
Injection pump is also noisy
I have a second 96 Granroad TD42. It exhibits NONE of these symptoms in exact same temps, same fuel, same everything.
This is NOT a cold fuel issue

Facts
Replaced fuel filter and checked all plastic lines
Only happens when its cold outside, near or below freezing
Its done this since I got it 3 months ago at 5,500 kms
We have installed the DTS Turbo system, made no difference
I have run fuel treatment in it every fill up
Does not matter the orientation of how I park it, uphill downhill all the same
Runs absolutely beautifully and strong as an ox UNLESS I come to stop or completely lift off throttle
Once fully warmed up it has ZERO symptoms.
I have another 96 Safari with factory Turbo TD42 and his has never exhibited any similar symptoms

Any help is GREATLY appreciated and anyone that can properly diagnose it I will send a Bottle of Jack Daniels!!!

Does it have an ac idle up on the pump? If so you might be able to turn on ac and see if that helps by lifting the idle rpm. This could lead you to some sort of cold start device that isnt functioning properly.
I usually adjust the high idle to @ 1k rpms when cold, makes no difference.
Also does the same with AC on
Thanks for input!!!!

Paladintruck, you are getting air in fuel at or before the injection pump. If before then its a fuel line or connection or filter head, fitting clear reinforced PVC lines in place of the flexible rubber lines will show where air is getting in.

Confirm this vehicle has the VE rotary injection pump? If so the problem is probably the injection pump governor selal gone hard and letting air in until the pump casing warms up and seals again. I do have a detailed write up on how to replace this seal on vehicle.....question is do you want to remove and reseal entire injection pump.

I have experience with this, if you want to discuss further just pm me for my number. I am in Canada.

If you want, send me your details (addy etc) leave the keys in it and I'll be happy to remove the offending vehicle for my own use!

Interested in how you acquired it.
I'm an importer, have been for about 30 years. Always loved the Patrols and Safaris.
This one is a non delivered UN vehicle. It was fitted with the na td42 blacktop. We installed the DTS turbo kit ti liven it up.
Trying to source a replacement filter head that has the filter heater like mine has now. Very hard to find this version...

Ive got the part number and diagram but cant find it available from any of my 5 or so regular suppliers in Japan
Did not realize the heater was via fuel, I assumed it was heated by warm coolant.
I imagine I can install a standard unit and simply bypass the fuel return line??
