We have seen that before on this forum, only recently. Pretty sure it was never fitted in Australia, but one of our OS members posted up a picture of it. From memory it was a heater as you suggest.

Paladintruck, you are getting air in fuel at or before the injection pump. If before then its a fuel line or connection or filter head, fitting clear reinforced PVC lines in place of the flexible rubber lines will show where air is getting in.

Confirm this vehicle has the VE rotary injection pump? If so the problem is probably the injection pump governor selal gone hard and letting air in until the pump casing warms up and seals again. I do have a detailed write up on how to replace this seal on vehicle.....question is do you want to remove and reseal entire injection pump.

I have experience with this, if you want to discuss further just pm me for my number. I am in Canada.

If you want, send me your details (addy etc) leave the keys in it and I'll be happy to remove the offending vehicle for my own use!

Interested in how you acquired it.

I'm an importer, have been for about 30 years. Always loved the Patrols and Safaris.
This one is a non delivered UN vehicle. It was fitted with the na td42 blacktop. We installed the DTS turbo kit ti liven it up.
Trying to source a replacement filter head that has the filter heater like mine has now. Very hard to find this version...

Morning, that filter head is heated from the injection pump return fuel. I have ordered one in the past and can look up the part number later but you can do the same from partsouq.com

I'll post up some photos later from troubleshooting this very problem. Might want to get someone's ear close to IP whilst activating the hand primer. Do this with engine cold, you might hear air moving at the IP.

Ive got the part number and diagram but cant find it available from any of my 5 or so regular suppliers in Japan
Did not realize the heater was via fuel, I assumed it was heated by warm coolant.
I imagine I can install a standard unit and simply bypass the fuel return line??

I would not just replace without understanding where the air is coming from as the air may be coming from the IP. Temporarily replace the return fuel lines from IP to filter head to tank return with reinforced PVC. It is starting to warm up outside (sunny) and i can send a few photos a bit later.

Hi
Your safari is designed for cold climates model and will advance the injection timing when the water temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius. An additional mechanism in the filter section is a bimetal that changes the route of the fuel to prevent wax effects when the fuel temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius.Even if the VE has not been driven any distance, the O-rings will deteriorate, so it would be a good idea to replace all of them.At the same time, recommend replacing all fuel hoses inside the engine compartment.
