Too much grease in the last rebuild..... That's all I can think of. Everything was still clean. Took **** loads of grease out is better now no screaming. Another note I'm over this tabor.... I'm gonna buy a proper low mount

Arron you'd probably be better to just buy a better motor for the tabor, would be a great winch then.

Do you mean the thread in the end plate?

If it's only one, there's enough there I'm sure it won't be a problem Arron.

Yea thread in end plates I managed to get a bolt on it... 6.5hp motor run around the 500 mark. And 200 extra gets me a runva or similar. The runva are massively slow though

I use a 50/50 mix of nulon grease and gear oil. A bit runnier, helps with freespool. Seems to work well.

A little off topic. But are these Warn 9.5xp worth the nearly 3k price tag? Seeing as though they just fill up with water?
Or should I just be a sheep an buy a runva like everyone else?

And as a side question. Why are the high mount winches so popular? Is it purely line Speed? At 8000lb seems a little light compared to say a 9 or 10 thousand pound winch.

Worth $3k???

Absolutely not! That kind of price is ridiculous. Admittedly the 6hp motor attached to it is one of the best going, in particular the earlier Bosch built ones. No way I'd pay $3k for that kind of winch though.

However they don't fill up with water... You may have mistaken it for the XD9000? That one has poor water sealing. The 9.5XP in a comparison in a 4wd mag a couple of years back was in fact the only one to survive a half hour dunking without a drop of water in it if I recall correctly.

There's far far better value winches around, warn are charging for the name if that's the going rate.

I put the XP lip seals on my old 9000 and that was spot on after that.

As for high mounts, with a few minor mods their reliability is awesome. Their line speed is exceptional, and the 8000 rating is a bit hard to explain. An M8000 will easily out pull most 12000 winches. I don't pretend to understand this, doesn't make much sense. Line speed compromises torque, so go figure?

They are a very different concept though; fluid lubricated not grease, totally different gearbox, brake, layout etc.

Not for everyone, they aren't exactly discreet, but if you absolutely positively have to have a winch to get you out of the poo, a high mount (with some relatively straightforward mods) is it. Mine is one of my favourite things on the car, and has well and truly saved my bacon more than once :)

I wouldn't pay that in a pink fit. The runva seems to have a good rep with a few blokes on here, may be worth a look?

Hey Leethal, what do you reckon the best method of stripping the paint / powdercoat from the Mount supports / gearbox cover would be ?

Mate I'm probably not the best person to ask, hopefully someone with more experience in paint and bodywork will see this.

Depending how bad it is, I just sand it and repaint (if it even needs it) but if it's really bad I use these type of disk stripper thingies;

These rip paint off anything.

I used to use a normal sanding disk, but only when it was nearly completely buggered so it wouldn't remove anything more than the paint.

To be honest I don't waste too much effort to get them pretty, I make them work as best as I possibly can, if it has to be pristine so you could eat your dinner off it I'm not the guy to bring it to lol

So as I said hopefully someone else who knows better will see this and educate us both!

Very nice mate. Look at what you've saved doing it yourself, and you've got a better job too :D
