well according to my boss i have done the impossible and have blown my diff. its puzzled me as i've only taken it out once (4wding) and since then only driven it on the road. he reckons that when i changed the diff oil that is when it started knocking. its not completely stuffed, i've been driving it ever since i noticed it, but its an annoying knock and i know its going to get worse.

anyway my boss said he's got a mate who can get me a replacement, im just curious how much are gq ls diffs worth? i cant afford to lock yet so im just going standard.

does it knock faster and louder as it gets going??? sounds to me like a tooth broken off the crownwheel. when you drained the oil did you notice anything metalic in the oil?
if so id be pulling the back diff out and checking.
also depends on if its disc or drum rear end. but honestly off the forums and ebay and the like you can get complete diff setups for like 300 bucks so shouldnt think it would cost ya to much.

its like a light sounding chatter not a loud knock like something is broken (experience from my mates rangie, drove home with a broken spider gear in his diff) boss reckons its a loose pinion or something. when i drained all the oils i didnt notice any metal on the plug, but the oil looked as if it hadnt been done in years (black as the night sky) drained it again today and nothing. very clean.

the noise you are decribing could just be the lsd plates what might help is if you go to a big car park and do a few tight circles and figure 8's driving around both ways to get the lsd plates to free up

if that makes sense

I recently changed the oil in my diffs, used LS 85-140 front and rear as recommended by others.

Not that I thought there was anything wrong, just I'd never changed it in the 3 years I have owned my GQ. I suspect the oil I drained was 90 weight, as it was much thinner than the stuff I put in.

I use castrol lsx 85w140 and as said is EXTREMELY thick. One of the guys on here (twodiffs maybe) recommends using one of these

Just pour the oil in,pump it up and let her rip. (haven't tried myself as he suggested using it AFTER I spent 40 mins with an oil syringe trying to do both diffs.

Cheers,
Nic
