Hi Guys

I love my patrol but there are two things i really want. More power to tow and a Tray.. but i also need 5 seats. So a while back i started a few threads on questions of motor conversions, tray conversions etc etc and was very close to purchasing an 06 patrol with a 6.5 chev and a tray conversion on it..but sadly the guy no longer wanted to sell. (dont blame him)

Anyway.. many things have gone through my mind. Do i go an F-250.. no, too big for many tracks i go hunting on. Do i go the new 76 series, but then theres stillnot trays and $20000 worth of extras to put in..
I have vented my frustrations on the fact there is a massive gap in our 4x4 diesel dual cab vehicles in Aus. You go from a 3ltr Hilux to a 7.3 ltr F-250. No in between. No 6 cyl diesels, no 8's that arent a truck.

Well it seems my prays MAY of been answered..i say may cause theres still more i want to see. But the new Navara coming out is a 3ltr 6cyl diesel with 550nm of torque! Now thats some power!

So this seems to have the power i am after and the tray i want (after i put an alloy or steel tray on it)

What i would like to hear from you guys with plenty of knowledge is what are your thoughts on these navaras? Our our Nissan cousins worth looking at. Is there something you dont like, things you do?

I figure after a 4inch lift, 33's, steel bar, winch, spotties, alloy tray, black steel wheels and lockers front and back ill have myself a quite capable truck. Your thoughts?

Thanks

Huffy

I had one of the early Navaras. Gave years of service carrying cartons of soft drinks and never missed a beat. Build quality was very good and I remember it fondly. It was a crappy yellow colour but that was all I could fault about it. The seats could have been better but I guess they've been improved since. The new ones are much bigger too and 550nms is some grunt.
Test drive seems to be the thing.

I just hope they fixed the the fact that the radiator sits so low in them (according to a couple of guys i have spoken to who own them) One of them cracked his radiator on fraser when he hit a hole he didnt see due to it being full of water on the run out tide.

navara

if the new model is based on the current d40 shell they have had a few dramas with rusting from the inside out. the paint is missing in some spots and to thin in others internally. also be very careful with towing as a few have split the chassis as the tow bars are working like a big lever in there. I have heard whispers that nissan may be doing something with there towbars but it was only on a hear-say basis.
if you like your patrol but want more power have you considered maybe a turbo and a dual cab conversion. ( not sure what eng you are running presently) probably cheaper than a new truck.? just a thought.

I read a review somewhere on the proposed V6 Navara TD and I seem to recall a $70k ish price tag, only available in top spec, and was serious coinage. Lots of questions in the piece I read re longevity/reliability as it was being built on a renault motor as I remember it..........and they didnt have a great record for their reliability.

Will see if I can find the article or a reference, I just dont recall right now where I read it.

you would have read that from either a drive.com.au or carsales.com.au new car review.

and correct, 550 only coming in a ST-X.

compare D40 ST-X and a 550 ST-X..
is it really worth 20k extra for a 3.0L v6 turbo diesel?

me thinks not..

20k is like 70% of 6.5 chev or 6.6 duramax conversion.

i have a bt 50 and really happy with it, not as capable as a patrol but not far off. power is great. and good on fuel. tows really well. mate has a navara d40 thats good. i find the bt50 more tourqy even tho on paper mine has less. his power feels very peaky. but still a great ute. for a dayly used ute very comfortable and plenty of power with a good fuel bill. as for the not yet out v6 navara, the bt 50 ranger are also coming out with a bigger motor eventually. i wouldnt like to buy the first of that bunch, like all things new there is teething problems. let some one else find the issues out before yourself
