General discussion has a rightful place in our forum, but, some members have been taking liberties with our good nature in some of its threads, it is clearly stated that abuse, bad language and porn are not acceptable in 'any' part of the forum. We are quite flexible in what we allow but some just want to cross the line and this is unacceptable. Some words we may let you 'disguise', they are not necessary but we do tolerate that occasionally, just not on a post by post basis, some words are just off limits no matter what, repeated offenses will result in a life ban. This forum is bigger than any one person or small group, we have had a few people leave in a hissy over the years because they couldn't handle the rules and it had no effect on us whatsoever, didn't even cause a ripple, so anyone who can't follow the rules today will have exactly the same effect, none.

GD was put in as a service to members to have a chat and a bit of fun, if you cannot do that without breaking the rules then we don't need you, you are not enhancing our much loved forum. This forum is not made up of any one demographic, as such a basic level of respect and civility should be presented by this forum to ensure all members are comfortable to engage and participate without feeling discriminated or harassed. We are already seeing significant growth in international presence and we want to continue to grow this forum's appeal to more women too. Some of the content we have seen in the past has not helped our cause and needs to be managed more thoroughly in future.

So take this as a general warning and in doing so we ask for respect of our forum, respect of our members (old and new), respect of the people who give up their time to keep this place going. When an Admin/Moderator makes a decision it is a considered decision and no correspondence will be entered into unless with each other.

If you do not see this notice in this section, then you are not a true regular member of this forum, like anything else ignorance of the rules is no excuse, basic rules are spelled out quite clearly in the newbies section.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Disagree it hasn't caused a ripple.
I miss input from Truckster, Roachie and others.
I hope the forum doesn't become too beige :|
Without sounding like a fan boy, I really enjoy the comedy relief Softy, Troy, 45 and others provide in our PC world.
Comedy and laughs should be valued a lot higher than they are imo.

Can you give some feedback why they packed their bat a balls and left?
I know one of the mentioned was logged in not long ago, and the other is a very active poster on another forum I frequent that has a lot more moderation than this one has by a loooong shot.

Just wanna get things clear..
Blatant swear words out, i got no problem with that..

Disguised swear words are tolerated under moderators discretion?
Well it's just NOT GD that this happens in, and its not just a set few..
A lot of people do it..
I don't feel it should be up to a moderators' discretion , you should be allowed to do it.. one moderater might be having a bad day and decide to ban someone for saying fck..

Do forum members have a problem with disguised swear words?

Just putting it out there Ross, yes I agree blatant swear words should be out..

Everything is at a moderators discretion, it doesn't matter what forum you are on, Pirate, Dodge Cummins, P4x4, My Patrol, Nissan Patrol, try getting away with what you guy's sometimes do in those and see how far you get, and you know exactly where this started.

It's simple follow the rules and we have no problems.

It sounds like the profane word for the female anatomy started it.
If there is one word that is guaranteed to offend that is it pretty well.
As the brother of 3 sisters, a son, a husband and the father of a daughter I don't like it either.
I withdraw my whinge

Well why did you do it? The ‘C’ bomb, spelt perfectly in capitals with a space between each letter does not become acceptable because you are ‘abbreviating’ something on a stubby holder.

As you agree blatant swear words (that being the worst) are out then it can only be assumed you were seeing how far you could push it, and then you complained when it got deleted?? Seriously???

You had your little dig at me for deleting it, no prob there water off a duck’s back, but you don’t know how lucky you were someone else didn’t see it first.

Warty nobody is saying folks can’t have a bit of fun in GD. Unless you think no fun can be had unless it involves constant swearing, soft porn, dragging threads off topic and smartarse (not in a light hearted way) comments directed at other members, let alone abuse.

You have people here who can’t help but mouth off at anyone who has a different taste in beer, lives in a different state, likes a food item they don’t, constantly dish it out but absolutely can’t handle it when they cop it back, and one in particular has run ins with at least 6 people I can think of for no other reason than they didn’t take his non-friendly digs without giving it back. I’m sick of treading on egg shells with these type of people, and the cumulative effect of this kind of thing is in many ways worse than the rare outburst because it leads people to think it’s acceptable, and it isn’t.

If anyone finds they have had posts deleted, it’s for a good reason, consider it a friendly warning, take it on the chin and consider why it got deleted because next time it might be a lot more than a deleted post.

Going back to the C bomb, spelling it cr... or kh... isn’t much better, let the record show. I know even I’ve done that in the past here but we all grow up and I certainly won’t be doing it again, anyone who wants to stay here should take the same view.

I don’t understand the view that admin wants to take the fun out of GD, which is akin to saying you can’t have fun without being disrespectful of the rules as mentioned above. If you can’t have fun without constant swearing and abusing people, then thanks for your honesty, it was nice knowing you but you won’t be missed. If you can, then good on you, carry on as normal and no need to get antsy because this issue isn’t directed at you.

That wasn't my point. My point is that when a regular contributor leaves the place is that little bit poorer as a result.
I met Bruce (truckster) a while back. Sold my son's old pushie to him for cheap. He just wanted the wheels.
He wasn't happy with something that went on moderation wise or arguments with one or more moderators. I can print the words he texted but it doesn't achieve anything. For all I know he may be unjustified, I only know (part of) one side.
That said I agree the moderation on here is pretty good and it is a thankless task generally.
I was just concerned we might have some regular posters, who make me laugh, banned.
I have spoken with Ross and I was mistaken, if they heed some simple advice.

At the time I wasn't trying to push any boundaries , it wasn't intentional to be offensive .. I wasn't being abusive, It wasn't directed at anyone, when I had a dig at you for deleting my post it was no different to what was said in welcoming you as a mod thread..

As I said before a simple pm to me instead of making it public would of been enough. And if you deemed it to be serious enough for a ban you should of done it ..

When I referred to having a dig at me for deleting it I didn't mean the wrong type of dig, sorry if it sounded like that, I took it the way I assumed you intended it and had a smile.

I've never banned anyone yet, I won't take that responsibility lightly when and if I do, but I didn't make anything public. We agreed I deleted your post, surely that is the exact opposite! :)

I've only had a short time doing this, but I can see why Gee pulls his hair out. Putting out fires that most people never see, it's not just once in a blue moon, it's regularly enough to do your head in. He puts his heart in to this place and has its best long term interests at heart, and letting it devolve into a slug fest of smart arses like some forums will not ensure our long term future.

I've been here long enough to also take some pride in the quality of both the tech and the folks here, and I agree with 90% of Gee's views. Feel free to disagree with him but do it in a respectful manner without getting all defensive (this is not directed at you Troy just in general) but fellas please appreciate the admin and mods all have the genuine best interests of this forum at heart. Look at how many 4x4 forums that used to be very popular now have almost faded away. Whatever we all do here clearly works, but like any relationship needs maintenance and tinkering to keep it on track, and occasionally a good chitstorm :D

OK, time to move on, we appear to have reached common ground, all we ask is that people heed the old saying, engage brain before opening mouth. Next time may have a very different result for anyone ignoring the rules and we make no apologies for that.

Absolutely!
One of the ways we deal with depressing and painful situations in the real world is by making jokes about such situations, incidents and phenomenons, but not necessarily in the middle of experiencing it, of course.
There is always somebody out there that gets offended by a joke due to certain personal facts related to the particular joke that a person can't relate to in humorous terms.
You can see that clearly in the world of professional comedians. They always manage to offend somebody, even with their most popular jokes. It's bound to happen and should be probably considered as normal.

I don't believe it just all my fault..

Yeah I said something, but it wasn't abusive or directed at anyone..
If you've used the C word without being abusive to anybody directly(other than the diehard PC crowd) and you made it 'diplomatic' by not using the popular spelling, then it should've been ok, because I've seen many folks using it here in humorous ways as well as abusive ways.
But, it appears it is no longer ok in this forum.

But, of course, there have been a cleaning operation going on this forum to make it slightly internationally civil for international community. I might have triggered the operation by my run ins in another forum, which I am guilty of.

However, mods seem to have increased the moderation level significantly lately 'cos I've been noticing a diehard insistence on sticking to topics as well. However, I do understand this is no democracy and the forum is a private entity at the end of the day. If the exercise can bring in more active members to this forum, then I have no reasons to whinge about it, as I would like this forum to expand and thrive, particularly at a time of competition from social media. But.. that is an IF from my end, and I dunno whether I am right or wrong. I can only wait and see and expect a good outcome while sticking to the rules.
