Hi There All,

I have recently purchased (Sept 2010) a 2002 GUIII 4.8L Auto & am totally NEW 4WDing. I have since fitted LPG to the vehicle.

My problem is; that since the LPG has been fitted I have had issues with the Instrument Cluster. The day after the gas fit, my wife phoned me to tell me that the dash had gone blank on her ( no speedo, revs, odometer & clock). I had a look the following morning, checked all the fuses & had a fiddle with the wiring under the dash. The dash came back to life. I put it down to a loose wire/connection when the gas gauge was installed.

All was well for about a month, when the same thing happened again. This time I couldn't rectify the problem. I took the vehicle to the Auto electrician, who couldn't find a problem, but, recommended I take it to an instrument specialist. The guy he suggested I use was a local guy, not, the one he usually sends work to. The report back was that the Instrument Cluster was STUFFED. He then proceeded to inform us that Nissan no longer manufacture a replacement cluster, but he could get a newer model cluster & reprogram it to suit. All for the token price of $2500. No mention was made of getting one from the wreckers. My wife said NO to the new cluster. A couple of days later, the cluster came back to life again, running smoothly for about a month before failing again.

This time I have also discovered that I can't change gears manually. This doesn't help when towing the Camper Trailer. The Air Conditioner, also has a mind of it's own. Running flat out cold, no matter where you turn the controls.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced similar issues, &, what was done to overcome these. I really want to get this truck dirty, but, don't want to get stuck up the creek without a paddle, while I still have these problems.

Incidently, we use the GPS to monitor the speed.

Visit the shop where you had the LPG installed and have a talk to the Mechanic who fitted the system to show you what they had out/removed/replaced etc during the fitment.....at least this will give you a starting point to achieve a fix .... might be nothing more than a bent pin in a plug ????

Hi Sackl,
I think this is the answer to your problems as I experienced the same after having my gas conversion ;mines diesel, you're petrol but won't make any difference.
This is a reply I sent to a member about 12 months ago with similar problem.....

"Yes I'm convinced the problems have NOTHING to do with the Cluster and EVERYTHING to do with earthing.
Two years ago we did 20,000km of which about one third went unrecorded because of the cluster prob, this time 27,000km and every km recorded.

I thought I cured the problem when I returned 2 years ago and fitted all the extra earth straps to BOTH batteries, it was fine for about 6 months when I decided to get the diesel gas conversion done and it started all over again. I was stuffed for several weeks until I read on here how one fellow had to fit an additional earth to his spots or bull bar...then the penny dropped...when they fitted the gas conversion it has a small computer box screwed to the firewall with an earth lead attached under one of the screws...I simply ran AN EXTRA EARTH LEAD from that point using simple electrical wiring down to a bolt on the engine mount to earth the chassis....BINGO..12 MONTHS AND HASN'T MISSED A BEAT.

It cost me $500 for the cluster in and out about 3 times with an auto elect and NATURALLY he coudn't find a problem with it because ther wasn't one."

I also took it back to the gas installer who could offer no remedy. He ..was amazed when I told him the solution.
Hope this works for you...Porks

Thanks Guys,
I took the truck back to the LPG installer after the 2nd failure & they reckon that it wasn't anything that they did. I will have a look on the weekend to see if I can find the earth points & lengthen them. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks Scott
