Doing a ls conversion and trying to decide between manual vs auto. Would like auto but keep hearing mixed opinions on 4l60 and 6l80 and manual would obviously be easier.

What are people running and anybody had issues with what they are running and what have you done to them to handle a patrol?

Nissan auto is an option but for the cost I was quoted for one beefed up with custom convertor, stand alone controller and bits to change from manual to auto, I'd be almost halfway to a drive in/drive out duramax/allison conversion. The auto quote was parts only too.

I imagine you will be up for the same to beef up a 4l60. What power do you plan on running?. The re403a is the stock trans for the TT 300zx so its hardly plastic.

the 6l80e is quite strong. they use it in the GTS which has 430kw so you should be sweet. Plus fuel should be better because of the engine revs at 100 with the six gears

I don't doubt the 6l80 will be strong enough but most I have spoken to say they need to be tuned and if they are not done right, it will destroy a trans. I think I am just going to stick with manual.

I msg wholesale auto in beefing up the 6l80e what they would recommend and it was 8k I think top of my head

give holmart spares a call. they stock the GTS auto for like $2650 and if it is factory behind 430kw you should be sweet. Yeah it might need to be tuned but just get it done when you get the engine done.

u cant run a 6l80 with an ls1 easily or cheaply

u will need to go ls2 then there is heaps of other things to start considering

the std Nissan auto is prob stronger than a 4l60

agreed. The ls2 is a better motor for wheeling anyway. the l98/76 is better again or you can come up with the money the ls3 is better again.

I spoke to Kewish auto's and Wholesale they both said the 4L6and 4L65 are rubbish and recommend the Patrol auto. you are looking around $6k for a good beefed up Patrol auto and $8k for a 6L80+ extras for that to work. both shops said the Patrol box is the better way to go.

I had my Patrol auto rebuilt for 4k.
That included fitting the HD Transgo shift kit, machining to fit extra clutches & steels, wider bands and rebuilding the factory TD42 converter.

It was done by a guy who specialises in building HD boxes for F250's and is the same combo he runs in a 800HP drag car.

You wont need to get a seperate controller, find a controller from a GQ TB42 carby model (not EFI), and you will be sweet (and much cheaper than the seperate controller sold by Wholesale Autos).

I have got my TD42 running in front of a TB45 auto using a TB45 trans controller, but it shifts a dash high. I have a TD42 trans controller that I just need a few spare hours to wire in.

The wiring diagrams can be a bit scarey to look at to start with, but if you work through it they are pretty straight forward.

I have decided to keep the nissan 5 speed box. I think the main reason people want to convert to auto is for ease of driving. It's just the way the world is going.

No mate just the 4 speed. The 5 speed is BIG $$$$ to get built for high horsepower.

The Nissan 5 speed aint that expensive if sourced from the US either

I don't know why people in this modern age of Google still look at what is local and not look mainly to the US, Europe can be good too
