Recently purchased my maverick, and the only key I got with it is smooth. Has zero teeth on the key at all. So before my car is stolen with a paddle pop stick, I'm trying to work out my options here. Has anyone upgraded there ignition barrel and keys to a later model ignition? Maybe something from a falcon with the diamond shape keys?
Any thoughts appreciated..

Go to Nissan/Ford and get a new key cut.
I know MQ/MK's had a key code on the glovebox lid, dunno about GQ's, if not just give them the VIN and proof of ownership.

Mate I agree, it you should just need a new key.
When I bought my truck the key which the PO used all the time was worn smooth and I thought the ignition barrel was gone as well because there appeared to be no locking mechanism. However the spare key (fortunately came with the truck) was hardly used and when I tried it, works perfectly in the barrel. The locking mechanism all works and all seems to operate as it should.
Try a new key first and see how you go.

I have to get a locksmith out to make a new key from the ignition barrel. Has anyone had that done before? Roughly what would that cost be?

Why would you need to get a locksmith out?
As I said, Nissan or Ford will be able to give you a brand new key.
