there is that tin cover that sits on top of the turbo on my 2006 gu 4.2l td motor.

Does anybody leave this cover off the motor?

What purpose does it serve there?

I get the feeling it would be trapping heat in there is all?

I too took mine off when I installed my pyro gauge probe nearly 2 years ago and it has not harmed anything.

Its there for a reason, its a heat shield.

It also allows an air gap to reduce radiant heat from damaging or melting things. This would be more evident once vehicle is sitting idle, like at traffic lights after a hard run or if you are working on the motor when its warm or hot etc.

Wouldn't it also assist in reducing heat transfer from the exhaust/turbo up to the intercooler - heating up the intercooler and therefore reducing power?

hi guys, mine was ditched two years ago too with the 3" exhaust, and as said its hasn't done anything. I did put some steel braid over the heater hoses were it runs close for the twine.

This shield will not change the under-bonnet temperatures as the total heat from the manifold/turbo is the same and it has to go somewhere.

However I leave them on as if something should come loose under the bonnet then it will not rest directly on the turbo/manifold. Also there will be some reduction in the radiant heat transfer to other components by leaving the shield on.

Take it off, leave it on, doesn't really matter.
