does anyone know if a mini spool is available for mq mk front diffs as they are heaps cheaper than air or auto lockers

its been mentioned a few times before, but i dont think anyone has looked into it much. i think the real budget people just weld their front diffs, and the non budget people spend the coin and get a part time locker. lokka's were about $550 last i looked and air lockers are way more.

if you do find someone able to supply a spool, i would aim for a full spool rather than a mini spool. would be a bit more suitable for a 4wd imo.

mini spools replace the spider gears inside open diffs. full spools replace the whole carrier (ie the ring gear bolts straight to it). all they do is remove the diffs ability to 'differentiate' the wheel speeds i guess you would say. it just locks the wheels together 100% of the time.

You would have to get out of the car EVERY time you selected 4X4 to lock the hubs in and visa versa . You could not just use the transfer lever between 2H and 4H because the diff would still be locked and steering would be almost impossible . Getting the hubs unlocked again after the diff is wound up would also be near impossible with your fingers . Auto hubs would be damaged in no time in this scenario .

a terrible idea, its hard enough to turn on road with the rear diffed locked, adding the front would be a nightmare you would feel the car tearing itself apart.

any front diff lock will have no effect on the steering when the hubs are unlocked.

x2 nerok - front diff lock has no effect on the road, unless of course you leave your hubs locked DUH

But like has already been stated , if the hubs are locked in you will NOT be able to steer it . If on a dirt track , EVERY time you come to a loose bit , you will have to lock the hubs in . And when through that bit you will have to unlock them again until the next patch . What a pain in the ass that would be , instead of just leaving the hubs in with an open diff or an LSD center or an air locker etc .

yes the steering will be reduced with a locked front diff, but there was a guy on here that welded his front diff a couple of months ago and only noticed a slight degradation. i personally dont think it would be bad either, hence why i have a lokka about to go in my front diff.

if you come to a real tight corner, unlock 1 hub, then you still have 3wd, which still beats a '4wd' with an open diff and 1 wheel slipping and the other not doing anything (effectively back to rwd).

but i dont think this thread was aimed at a full vs auto vs air vs lsd vs open thread. he just wants a spool.

Hey mate let us know how the lokka goes I hear they are noisy as when cornering clikck clik click!
Wouldn't matter for normal 2WD with hubs out but long run in 4WD high might get a bit too much.

the only reason i asked is instead of welding the diff a spool or mini spool is reversable if i dont like it i can take it out and not a lot of money lost $100 to $300 for a spool compared to $500 plus for a lokka and $1200 plus for air locka

if the clicking is too loud for you, you can run a thicker oil and that will make it quieter

power steering makes a welded diff not too hard to handle
